Ment to say in my last post, best I've seen is a complete vw beetle engine and box with All accessories in place. It was when you had to pay Mr scrapman to tow a car, so it pulled it to bits and binned it over a few weeks :L The entire car minus 1 number plate went. ____________________ Eat well, poo hard

Where we live, the council has given everyone new black bins, they are TINY. Easily a third the size of our existing two. Now they want you to fit all two weeks rubbish in that one bin which is absolutely tiny. Also, we've rang up and complained and been told that unless our rubbish is in that tiny bin, they WILL NOT collect it. If we put out our other black bins, they will be left. .
Luckily, we seem to have some binmen who have a dreg of common sense and they still collect it for us.
I couldn't give a damn about recycling, nor the "organising stuff into different bins" crap. It's rubbish, it goes in a bin, a black bin, it gets taken away. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

I don't remember the war, (the second world world one), but I remember the slum clearances during the 60's in Nottingham. Nothing was recycled from the buildings they cleared---everything was dumped. Bricks, slates, glass, joists, floorboards, lead pipes, you name it, everything. The clearances were going on into the 70's, whilst the now (landfilled) concrete hells were being built.
During those years, we had to save and re-use every-fucking-thing.
Bottles, shoes, crates, paper..oh yeah, we had paper shortages. we had shortages of everything. Not having any electricity was only a minor inconvenience if you had a gas cooker, and everyone had a coal fire to cook on. Besides, there were only 3 channels on the television (if your family could afford to buy or rent one) and the programmes finished about tennish anyway.
I became a scavenger.
Before all our rubbish disposal places became monetised and regulated, you could go to your local tip and pick up, for free, stuff that you have to bid for now on ebay. I made a comfortable living on the valuable things that people would drive miles to a dump for to get rid of.
Those were good days, people weren't starving any more, there was lots of work. So much work, in fact, that if you didn't like your job you could have a new one the next day. Most of my friends and family worked for companies as Raleigh, Boots, Players, there were also the Council jobs, if you could get one....the gas and electricity were run by the council, so were the buses.
During this time, (the late 70's) I finished my schooling and joined the Royal Navy as a a Marine Engineering Mechanic....
Well, that didn't work out how I was hoping it would.
The eighties, for me, saw the onset of raw, naked greed and avarice. Profit first and foremost. Raleigh, the world famous brand that was started in a little workshop not many streets from where I grew up, was bought out by an international development company. 1800 jobs gone. Sites closed.
The Miners Strike. Even now, the truth about Orgreve is hidden, by the powers that authorised it.
And so to today.
So many local industries closed down, forgotten. National industries? Do we have any?
Well, we are a major importer (subsidised) of goods from China....(Itchy, can you find that link about postal costs for me please?)
Ahhh.... today. We are all driven by our wants and desires, and not by our needs.
How do we know what we want? Advertisement executives tell us! Do you have a television? Chances are, you have the vile spewings of Advertisers talking to you!
If you have a television in a room where children are watching, how many advertisements have they watched by the time they are old enough to own their own credit card?
Ok, from 4-18, on average, based on 5 hours a day, with a 2 minute ad break after every 20 minutes, that equals about 17,033.00 your child will have seen. 17 thousand adverts to consume products. To be fashionable/cool/trendy/the latest Beckam/Idiot/......
We don't need those things, industry needs us to by them tho.
And here we come to the crux. do we have an infinite ability to supply an infinite amount of oil-based consumer crap?
I don't think we do, but if you think you have an argument against conserving supplies, and recycling those we have, would be nice to hear them.
Sorry for the brevity/ommissions, I have a lot more to say.
Green bin/household bin level issues tho, seriously? As if..making our kids feel guilty about which bin the banana skins or the empty chardonay bottles go in will do owt.....ffs. |
