Hello,

I work in IT and was wondering if anyone has experience of selling old IT equipment.

In the past we have sold to staff our old computers and laptops, but our users are less and less interested in PC towers.

I have about 40, Dell Optiplex 780s (Some 760s), these are full size towers typically 250mb HD, either 2GB or 4GB of ram. They are full size towers. They all came with a Windows 7 Pro OEM license and this will install and activate using the Dell Windows 7 disk.

They are typically 5 years old.

I can either dispose of them, destroy the HDs, but there has got to be some worth in this.

I have googled this and lots of we will recycle for free, but i'm really looking for a firm that will buy.

Does anyone have any experience in this or can anyone recommend a company.

My work is in West Yorkshire.

Used to have to go through all the WEEE bollocks.

Have now found a local company who buy office furniture, shelving, pcs etc etc and refurb and sell on.

He's just given me a price of £100 for half a dozen old ProLiant servers, some old laptops and some dead pcs to use for spares.

I'd get more on ebay but hassle and effort.

I'd probably let him have it for free to save me having to catalogue it all for WEEE and then pay to dispose of it.

Research WEEE / EoL disposal companies. By research, I mean call and speak to. They all shout about taking 'crap' for 'free' but really, most appear to be small traders selling stuff on to places where it's actually got some IT based value (ie it still switches on and computes), be it local or national places, or in some cases third-world places who need cheap old guff.

Don't let them have any hard drives though, you should remove them and store them in a safe place, and get them shredded (and relevant docs) separately. GDPR will hurt you next year if you bugger that part of it up.

The Optiplex range used to be top quality kit - I was employed by Dell for a couple of years to install/update etc at client sites. However the build quality deffo suffered when manufacturing went to China. Anyway, given that these are all ex-corporate stock, i.e., light use, I would stick em on a pallet, wrap them in cellophane and put them on ebay with a minimum price. Flog them on the brand name, ex corporate and light usage!

For the record Fujitsu Siemens build excellent quality desktops and servers these days - IMO.

Best way to do this is ebay and add the money made to the department budget for christmas party, cocaine and hookers.

How much would you want for a 4gb 780 posted to south wales?

We use Arrow Value Recovery, but that tends to be for piles of datacentre stuff like rack mount servers and old storage arrays. You don't get much back, but they do take a lot of the hassle out of it.
