I've had this Samsung laser printer for years, I've refilled the toner a few times and the quality has got progressively worse (apparently after the third time you're meant to get it cleaned).

Rather than do that I bought a new/unsealed (genuine) drum off eBay, stuck it in and it's still printing poorly. If I take the drum out and shake it from side to side it prints better. I've run a cleaning thingy but still no joy.

Any ideas? Should I admit defeat and buy a new printer? It was only £40 all those years ago but Dave-G 'nomics.

Elaborate on "the quality has got progressively worse"?
It fading? blotchy? streaks through it? etc.

Fading. As it's now it'll print half the page faded unless I shake the toner around first. Could be my 'new' toner cartridge was already used.

So new drum but an old toner cartridge that's been refilled multiple times by yourself?

I'd suggest it's likely the toner that's screwey, especially if you report it getting better on shaking. Sounds like it's not managing to get enough toner onto the drum.

Is it an OEM toner cartridge? Maybe get it professionally refilled?

It's a new drum/toner cartridge, OEM yeah. I could try refilling this cartridge, I think I have some toner left.

The new drum was just over a tenner but anymore and I'd buy a new printer.

Some printers know when a brand new toner has gone in, either by chip id or mechanically, and reset the voltage bias to suit the new cartridge.

How old was the 'new' drum? They are sensitive to light and moisture so if it's been out of the packet but unused it might not be any use.

You can't refill toners forever, moving parts and roller surfaces wear out.

Otherwise try the troubleshooting in the user guide or online.

No idea but it was from an online toner/cartridge seller so I'd hope it was stored properly.

Inside, there will be a window where the laser comes out. If that is caked in toner that ain't helping.

Obviously switch it off at the mains first.

I just bought a brand new OKI colour laser for £88 (+VAT).

Duplex, USB/ethernet/wifi, 26ppm, 3 years warranty

Doesn't seem worth the hassle of trying to fix the old Samsung when new ones are so cheap.

Is disassembly required? Had a look inside where the drum sits and couldn't see anything:

What model was that and what's the situation with refilling/replacement toner?

I don't print all that often (just the occasional ransom note) but it would be nice to print in colour occasionally. The cartridges in my inkjet printer dried up years ago due to lack of use.

It's the C332dn

Comes with starter toners which give approx 1000 pages.

That'll keep me going for a while as I mainly just do a small amount of invoices (most are emailed pdf) and printing out bank transactions at VAT return time.

When they run out toners are much of a muchness for most colour lasers. Most work out at about 3.5p per page on quoted figures. Or I just buy another new printer.

I don't use compatible toners - I've seen too many printers ruined by them.

Johnny 5 no disassemble! Either above or below the drum. Laser shines out of the window, which is a (dark?) glass horizontal letterbox. If window is dirty you'll get light or white streaks going down the page.

Clean with isopropyl alcohol, don't recommend to use water.

*bump* So I cleaned the inside (couldn't see anywhere the laser came out), and it printed pretty much the same. However this morning I went to print something out and...

I did my usual toner/drum shake but it's not looked that good since the printer was new Shocked (the Ristorante logo's meant to be slightly faded btw). I won't shake it before printing next time and see how it looks.

Also pizza voucher because jew Embarassed

Can you wipe any of the toner off the page - as in, is it dusty?

to me that looks like a faulty toner cartridge

Something is pissing toner inside the printer for sure, can see the lines from the rollers on the page.

Yeah just came back to this thread, saw the image again and realised just that.
Rookie mistakes are my Joie De Vivre.

There does however appear to be spots of toner top right, outside of the printable area, so mudcow is probably still correct.

may sound drastic this, but have a look to see if there is a work shop manual/ disassembly guide for your printer.

I'm still running a shit load of HP Laserjet 1300 which are that old if Noah had needed to print his ark plans he would have used a 1300.

Only parts that "really" go in a laser printer are; toner & cartridge - I can normally get 3 refills before the cartridge needs binning & replacing

pickup roller - the thing that moves the paper, paper is abrasive

an fuser - sticks toner to paper, the fuser sleeve normally rips.

My bet is you have a faulty cartridge from the manufacture

So many printer experts. Such little sense.

The developer/toner mix deteriorates after time, it can cause random fading (dev is positively charged, drum gets a positive charge and the laser neutralizes areas for the image to attract toner).

Laser won't cause random fading, any problems with the drum would cause a pattern on the image.

Get new toner.

MC what does it look like if you just print normal txt?

I can see on the image posted some crap on the rhs.

When I used to be a printer tech this was sometimes down to a clogging up or failure of the bit that de-charges the drum. As there was still some charge you could get ghosting and toner not sticking to the drum well enough and coming off before it was meant to.

linky may help but it could well be that all of the bits are in the drum and are replaced at the same time on your printer.

All the marks are on the original.

The charge roller/corona wire being fouled with toner/dirt would cause lines in the feed direction from edge to edge not random dots.

Damaged or worn drums can cause dots, but there would be a pattern as the drum rotates.

Dodgy developer can be intermittent as per ops post and vary in its symptoms (fading, back ground, spots) and can happen anywhere on the image.

The only problem I could really spot with the image was

https://i.imgur.com/YM1NgxK.jpg

Which would be caused by loose toner getting on the paper and running through the fuser as its off the printable area.

The rest of it looked like a grey-scale conversion of the original.
