PostPosted: 22:00 - 17 Apr 2017    Post subject: Generator head bolt torque Reply with quote

Hi, apologies it's not a bike engine but the generator does power my bike's tyre warmers. I have a Powercraft 3200 generator that looks to have a head gasket that's on the way out. I can get replacement parts for it fine but I can't find a repair manual for it anywhere.

Because of this I have no idea what torque the head bolts should be. Has anyone here rebuilt a generator engine before that would have a rough idea what they might be? I won't know what thread size they are until I pull it apart. I was going to try tightening them with a torque wrench set to increasing increments to try and guess the torque, but if they're stuck fast (it's about 5 years old) that won't be any use.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Pictures and thread/bolt sizes will help.

Simply torquing the bolts isn't a great idea. If the gasket is on it's way then it's probably that the head or barrel has a warped surface.

or loose because they never got the "500 mile tweak". Worth giving it a try before you take it apart but be prepared to go on the great gasket hunt or make your own. ?

diameter of the studs will give you a pretty good idea as they will have been specified to match the torque required.

Can we start a sweepstake? My entry - 32-34Nm

hence the quotes.

Engineeringwise, the motor does not care if it is in a generator or in a motorbike.

I have never, never never not ever not even on my home-built 400hp turbo bike gone back later to re-torque the head bolts, and I've never suffered from not doing it.

Used to be standard practice and was in all the workshop manuals (manufacturer manuals, not Haynes) back in the day - can't comment on the newer stuff but I doubt a generator is that high tech - can't do any harm

I think the key point there is that it was home built ... so you knew it was torqued properly in the first place. Very Happy

It looks like a Honda GX copy engine to me, I'd be inclined to find out which variant and use the head gasket and manual for that particular engine.

Hi everyone, thanks for the info. Tried contacting Aldi but they want receipt numbers which I don't have - bought it 5 years ago.

I've got hold of a gasket set for £18 so whipped the head off. Bolt looks to be steel, either zinc plated or stainless, I can't tell.

Bolt dimensions are: M8, 1.25 pitch, 55mm long. Head looks to be cast aluminium. Bolts have 'KY' on the top of them

Good shout on the GX engine, I'll have a look. Old head gasket looks OK to me but it is definitely leaking air from the top part, once the engines up to temp you get one side blowing cold air through the gasket and the other hot.

If it is a warped head then I'll not be too upset spending £18.

Thanks Thumbs Up
