Does anyone have any knowledge of decent roads/routes around the peaks?

There'll be around 10-15 of us from r/motouk this Saturday & Sunday riding around the peaks aimlessly as none of us know any decent roads.

i've got a few ideas but they'll only cover 1 day.
trying to avoid Mattlock as well.

I don't know about a whole day as the routes we did the in the peaks especially with Fran and JohnC wouldn't take a very long time.

Very Happy

A decent one is Glossop and Snake Pass. BTW the record AFAIK is still held by Fran at from the last Snake road junction in Glossop to the traffic lights is a just under 7 minutes.

Once you pass the reservoir turn left up what was formerly Strines Road (now called Mortimer Road).

Stop off at the Strines Inn for a break.

Then head north following the road until you hit the A616 then turn left.

You now have two choices. Holmfirth, Holme Woodhead.

Or you can turn left and go down the A628 and eventually back onto the M67. A628 is faster. Holmfirth Triangle is narrower and twistier.

The Holmfirth route used to be the Holmfirth triangle. The surface of Strines used to be awful maybe it's been fixed. The Snake used to be awful too before it was resurfaced and had a 50mph limit (back then it was NSL or uh unlimited Very Happy).

The other route is the same after Snake pass you turn right down towards Hope Valley A623 or the A6. This takes longer.

Another thought is Glossop but instead of the Snake you go south to the A6 and the A623 down to Bakewell and across to Carsington (free bike parking rapey cafe prices though) and go north to the Snake on the way back.

All above information is a bit out of date in regards to the Holmfirth area. I have driven the bottom route (note driven in a car) so they're still quite good.

Having spent the last four years in Bakewell and Buxton here's what I can tell you.
First up Easter weekend is going to be the worst time to do anything, on a bike, in the Peak District, it will be packed with caravans, campervans, Sunday drivers permanently lost, ramblers, boy scouts, slow as fcuk cylclists and Harleys clogging up the roads. If you can put up with that then crack on.

The Cat & Fiddle is overrated, clogged with artics and knackered old MX5's wheezing up the hill, the road surface is, literally, cracking up, average speed cameras and the actual Cat & Fiddle pub has been shut for a year!

Ok bad bits over!
The A5004 from Whaley bridge to Buxton is a cracking bit of road, way better than the Cat & Fiddle!
Take the A6 From Buxton to Bakewell, good and twisty.
Turn right onto the A5270 this is a proper hooning road with some proper bends.
When you get to the end of this road turn left onto the A515, this is a boring road but after 5 miles or so turn left onto B5055 to Monyash, the stretch between Monyash and Bakewell is very nice.
From Bakewell take The A6 back to Buxton, there's a very nice set of bends as you go through the woods just before you get to the Taddington dual carriageway. If you catch these bends with no traffic in the way you can really go for it.
You then head on back to Buxton, if you liked what you just did, turn left, back onto the A5270, A515, B5055, A6, etc. etc.
I used to do two or three laps of that route on a summers evening!

Going to have to agree here, went up a few weekends ago on what must have been one of the first sunny Sundays of the year.

So much road foliage and I really don't enjoy crawling through Matlock having to pay special attention to pedestrians that decide to step out in front of me. Felt like there were cyclists and ramblers around every corner.

Lot of roads that would be good if you can get a clear run through.

Yeah avoid Matlock bath unless you really want to go as it will be packed out the wazoo and not worth it anyway.

Same as the others have said, the snake is good but going to be busy = pretty shit but I would do it anyway if you have never done it before.

That route brings back painful memories -- you appear to be starting at exactly the place I ended up with a stainless steel memento in my right knee 25 odd years ago Surprised there weren't quite so many warning signs for rookie riders then .......

The route between Ashford, Sheldon, Flagg is a, muddy, single track road mainly frequented by ramblers and tractors, lined with dry stone walls, no hooning to be had there, i'm afraid.

You've also missed out the very best bit, the A5270, that is a seriously good bit of road, some very nice bends, with excellent visibility!

The Snake has very regular speed camera vans on it.

Went for a wee spin this morning.
Took Sid's advice and did that Whaley Bridge to Buxton route..then back...then rode it again. Light traffic was a blessing.

C&F carpark was as busy as when the pub was open...I gave it a miss and overtook some cars because I felt like a riding god.

Sore but feels good to be riding after the hand/wrist injury.

FWIW I did the Woodhead pass and Strines/Mortimer Road today, and can confirm that the surface of Strines Rd (it's always Strines Rd innit) is now 100% beeee-eautiful. Thumbs Up
