Was caught out on the bandit a few days ago, broke down. After a while of faffing trying to see the problem was. i checked the contents of the petrol tank. Bone dry.. tap was set to 'ON'. So unsure why it ran it dry as i had put 15 quid in earlier that day. Anyone got any ideas?

And before anyone asks, its definatly set to 'on'

EEERRRRR you only got £5 worth of fuel or the engine oil level has increased.

Assuming that everything you have said is true (I have no reason to doubt that).

You are losing fuel somewhere - check the lines for any leaks.
Check the engine oil for a petrol smell.

Edit: Just remembered some ropey garages do sometimes add paraffin to their fuel to bulk it up, your £15 might have been more like £7 or £8... Also depends where you got your £15 fuel from. Motorway services would take £18-£20 to fill the bandit.

On or reserve? if you're emptying the tank from ON you might have a leak from the tank itself or from petcock gasket.

OR, someone put the fuel tap back on 180 degrees from standard, turn it 90 degrees and see if it points to prime.

Remove tank, check underside for damage and corrosion. Leaks usually leave a trail of clean, slow leaks leave brown varnish. Remove petcock and check state of gasket, replacements are cheap. Check some numpty hasn't removed the two tubes and coarse filters that regulate on and reserve take-off depth.

I think there's also an access panel for the level sender, check that too.
