Hang on, if they are that bad (tight) you wouldn't be able to get a feeler in there at all. Not mixing metric and imperial measurements by any chance are you? What measurements are you actually getting with the old shims? |
Why wouldn't I be able to get a feeler in? For the 1st exhaust valve with a clearance of 0.178mm, a shim size of 0.210 and a specified clearance of 0.260, gives a replacement shim size of 0.130. I can easily get a 0.15 feeler into that gap.
The measurements:

Ok fair enough, tbh I've only dealt with shim over bucket before and those are big items by comparison. At .130 mm your talking about a 5 thou shim (sorry struggle to think metric in these things.)
Like Fizzer says though might be worth checking the valve profile to see if new will help or just do the best you can for now and keep a look out for a newer head. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Even thinking about putting new valves in seemed like a hugely scary job, but looking at the procedure, its not actually too bad. But at £230 just for the parts just putting a new engine in seems like it might be easier (which seems crazy but there you are).

I found the problem, it wasn't the measuring of the clearances (which was correct), it was the calculations for replacement shims Consistently dropped the decimal point when subtracting clearances from the shim sizes Using the correct method, no shim needed was below 1.90mm, so though they have all closed up, it's not by much. Wasted the entire weekend before I figured it out but no one to blame but myself.
Cheers for the advice ____________________ I tell you what, mathematically, I'm having it |
