|
|
I asked Esso about there Ethanol content as I prefer pay for petrol not Ethanol, here is there reply:
Dear Mr. Thompson,
Thank you for contacting Esso Customer Care.
The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).
There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).
Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland) and we have no current intention to add ethanol to Synergy Supreme+ in other areas of the UK.
We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland.
Yours sincerely,
Kristof Gergye

So it seems in the northwest at least Esso is the only supplier that has no ethanol in their super unleaded. ____________________ 07 Yamaha YBR125, 07 Honda CG125 , 15 CBR300R (Chocolate Crank, Deaded), 16 CB500FA, 19 Honda Forza 300, 70 Suzuki SV650 |

Karma later after my refractory period.
Pretty racialist of them, reckoning that the hicks in the provinces will be fine with moonshine in even their premium juice. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thats why I'm a bit confused to see why theres a problem. |
It releases less energy than petrol. Less bang per buck sterling.
It dissolves fuel hoses, carb diaphragms, floats, even seals in older fuel injectors.
It binds with water (including moisture in the air), leading to clogged jets and rusted tanks.
It's not even ecomentally friendly, as it requires fossil fuels to grow the leaves and such that it's squeezed from. Ze Germans revolted against it on that basis - even the Greens don't like it.
It's the devil's spooge. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Except for many models of Ducati, Triumph, KTM and Aprilia with plastic (usually Acerbis) tanks? Ethanol can cause plastic tanks to swell, ripple, crack, break fuel pump seals, or leak through internal overflow pipes. This is especially risky if the tank is left full with E10 fuel for long periods.
The problems are well documented online in the States, where 10% Ethanol has been standard in petrol for quite some time. Successful class action lawsuits have been lodged (certainly with Ducati, possibly others). There's also a good secondary market in the supply steel or carbon fibre replacements.
I had an issue with a 2011 Ducati Streetfighter I bought used. It needed a new tank because of water absorption due to ethanol. £1600 from Ducati. Fortunately I found a new one over Winter for very much less than that, but it could have been a very expensive defect.
There's a reason that most new models have reverted to steel/aluminium tanks. As 10% Ethanol becomes more common in Europe, I would think very carefully about buying another bike with a plastic tank, and if I did, I would want to know where I can buy Ethanol-free petrol.
