Unsure any Moto GP team wants to actually lose races.

Of course I know there's no fucking chance of me ever doing anything useful with my imaginary degree, as I like to waste my time doing shit like trolling a bike forum full of people that can see through idiots like me. Rolling Eyes

FTFY. now fuck off with your inane shite.

so what about the guys behind the scenes who design bikes and are involved in creating prototypes and all this.
Anybody have any info about this? how do I become one of these people- looks like a very cool job.
I just would like an idea of the route of a typical engineer...

With all due respect, that sounds like the least suitable job in the world for you judging by your recent posts.

Reputable engineering degree first step. Helps if it has a Motorsport bias although a couple of the guys I studied aeronautical with went on to Motorsport so not essential and there are many other disciplines. There are also post grad Motorsport courses out there. It's a hard shift and often not for stellar wages.

That said I also vote troll.

Apparently they prefer aeronautical engineering etc. as the Motorsport engineering courses are too specific. Rory Byrne famously lacked engineering training and went onto be a successful car designer, having mathematical knowledge. However I'm still trying to work out Arcane, either being good at mathematics is like having a flare for languages, or he's not telling us something.

unfortunately brains does not necessarily = good level of common sense. or general aptitude for mechanical stuff. or anything useful.

in the Navy, the lads used to say "They [officers/graduates] could tell you the square root of a baked bean tin, but there's fuck all chance they'd figure out how to open it"

usually about right too. Rolling Eyes

Automotive engineering BEng+MEng from a good university, or perhaps Aeronautical engineering given the current empahsis on aero in motogp, Aero was the way to get into F1 when i was Automotive BEng.

You might have upto 40 credits/year of maths in an engineering degree, but what they really teach is the design process. It was a culture shock moving across the faculty from automotive to CompSci, which whilst more strongly mathmatical had at least moved on from the waterfall model of design.

Perhaps your best route to get into motorsport is through Operations Research, which is best approached through maths not engineering. CompSci dabbled in this, but I have friends from the maths department who took a logic and OR route who can kick my ass at this, and they are in all kinds of cool places. Actually understanding how to optimise something rather than blindly feeding shit to FEA is more than handy.

I got lost in the details. Data structures for functional meshes. Nothing actually useful like being able to do lazy-evaluated FEA, just manipulating 3d scanned imagery. And I then came out the other side with a vague music career...

I really did make a mistake not choosing engineering

No I don't think you did Very Happy Seriously some people are better at the theoretical side of things, others are more practical. You don't sound very practical which isn't an insult or a bad thing, just pick something you're good at if you ever want to have a decent career. Particularly if you're not sure what you want to do it's better to have a broader degree than something specialised.
