Cracking down innit. 600% increase in last 2 years too much to bear - something must be done.

Oh what's that, Operation Venice has already been in operation 2 years? Bugger, that's made us look silly hasn't it. Best avoid that in the article.

Dicks.

At least it's an "Operation", which means they're doing something. Even if it's only coming up with slogans for their new mugs.

Marking: Choose to mark your bike parts with the vehicle identification number (VIN) number, your postcode or registration number using an ultraviolet marker pen or property marking kit.

I'd question whether doing so has ever resulted in any owner getting their bike (or parts thereof) back. I asked Scotchplod about recovery figures via various parts marking solutions and their answer was "We dinnae even record bike and scootay crimes separately fae car thefts, ye ken" (or similar).

I think you'll find that Operation Venice is more about stopping people on Scooters mugging people walking along the street.
So Riders are the villains they're looking for, rather than bike/scooter thieves.

A small by-product may be that they catch the odd guy (when he's selling his nicked phones etc) that admits to 100 cases of bike theft to be taken into consideration for a lower community service sentence (which Plod will agree to because it clears up 100 bike thefts)...
Until they decide that a thief loses his health and safety rights the moment he commits a crime (so Plod can chase him), anything they do will just be scratching the surface...

Ride around on appropriate bait bikes and wait for the ped scum to come to them?

The only way to clamp down on it is a shoot to kill policy. Rubber ammo to safely knock them off followed by a tactical shot through the back of the head at close range.

Failing that - can you mount some kind of gun / charge / projectile / airbag under the seat of your bike so if it gets ridden off without being disarmed, off it will go?

Actually ... the airbag ejector seat is probably fairly easy to build into a seat ..... any takers / willing to film for LOLZ? Can't be dangerous, airbags are for safety.
