Which was over 12 months ago or 30000 miles.

Anyway topped it up the coolant with water (it was low) I'm going out now to give it the berries in the rain.

I don't think you're meant to top it up with water, or whilst the bike's warm if you want an accurate level.

In order of likeliness .......

1. Low coolant
2. Thermostat fucked
3. Fan/cut in switch fucked
4. Water pump fucked
5. Warning light sensor fucked
6. Cooling system needs flushing and refilling.
7. Head gasket gone.
8 OR 1. Owner has killed bike

My fan switch died recently and I had the exact same symptoms Wink

If you haven't changed anything recently then try these first...


1. Low coolant
2. Thermostat
3. Fan switch /temperature sensor

My bet is the head gasket, as any cracks in the radiator would be visible = moisture. Plus, any coolant contaminating the engine oil would show as emulsion. But then, depends on how much OP knows about the stuff he says.

OP, did you bleed the air out of the cooling system? Air is a isolant, doesn't really transfer heat that well.

Because not enough coolant will not go through the radiator as designed but just drop down to the lowest point. The radiator is the first thing to starve on a cooling circuit when the level is low.
