I spoke with a guy who does powdercoating, showed him some photos and he said it's absolutely fine.
However, guys in my motorcycle shop have never heard anyone do this, and displayed some concern.

Has anyone done this before? Should I be concerned?

Are you going to strip the spokes and rebuild it?

there's no problem in powdercoating the rim itself, and loads of people do it for vintage bikes which originally had black rims.

But I would be wary of trying to do it to a built up wheel.

It's a built up wheel. I would lose the ability to adjust the spokes without breaking the coating.

Does a spoked wheel flex much? I imagine the flex would crack the coating.

It will look like crap and last about ten minutes.

Get the wheel rebuilt.
