Alien: Covenant

Took the good lady to see this on Friday, after being impressed with the trailer. I loved the first two alien films, found the third hard going. The others haven't been good, and I haven't seen Prometheus.
Massive let down. I don't know if I had over-hyped it in my head (very fond memories of Alien / Aliens combined with a good trailer), but came out feeling that the had missed the atmosphere that the originals had. The fear of being stalked, the tension coming from the cinematography and the tight soundtrack. The actors were ok (Danny McBride was very good, and I usually hate the characters he plays). Where there were deaths, I found that the characters got over it quickly, partners, loved ones, friends were all forgotten in a matter of a few scenes. Fassbender was great though.
Overall, don't pay to watch this. Get it free or wait until it's available.
5/10

I have just got back from seeing it. 8/10 for me.

It had the mix of claustrophopic and epic huge sets that the first 2 alien films had.
Loads of little nods to the first three films, it did get a bit too biblical in places. The twist was good and not what I predicted.
I am a huge fan of the first three films and this one slots in as the 3rd best out of the now 5 in the franchise.

Fassbender is sublime, the lead female is no Ellen Ripley and the rest of the cast are quite forgettable and killed off at a rapid pace.

It made it all the more fun when the woman in the seat next to use jumped and screamed at the face hugger part! Though apparently there are only so many ways you can kill a xenomorph on a spaceship.

Made for a good evening and I would happily pay to watch it again on the big screen.

6.5 out of 10 for me. Better than Prometheus but too predictable. Nearly £15 at the imax, where do I claim my blu-ray copy of the film?

Also noticed this when I was checking film times:

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Fisty. The woman next to me also jumped at the facehugger scene Smile

I dunno, I think I maybe went in expecting too much, and maybe with too high an expectation? I wanted to love it, especially after Alien: Resurrection (haven't seen prometheus yet)but felt let down.

I went in expecting it to be utter garbage, but it was a free screening (with open bar after), so gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised.

It was better than I thought it would be, usual gaping plot holes which I find consistently more difficult to ignore the older I get, but also predictable as mentioned. Needed more shower scenes.

If I had not seen Prometheus I probably would have enjoyed Covenant less, as the "story line" (what little there is) revolves around and builds on the last film.

alien - covenant - 6/10

Watched this yesterday. Not impressed. Standard American high school cliche pap. Mildly entertaining at best.

5.5/10

If you want a great Groundhog Day style film, watch Groundhog Day for the gerzillionth time.

Kong: Skull Island 3/10 - awful, basically just a copy of the most recent Godzilla movie, which was also terrible.

Independence Day 2.0 or whatevs. 4/10

ID4 the Next Generation. Only the next generation is meh.

I appreciate that they lampshade the absence of Will Smith, but it really needed a Will Smith. The 1.0 cast are the only ones worth watching.

FX and plot are about what you'd expect.

Sadly, the aliens lose, and the Murcans win for Murca, because Gott mit uns.

In 20 years time, I doubt anyone will even remember the 2.0 cast, or this barely adequate film.

The Incredible Hulk (2008) 3/10

Urgh. What was that? A disastrously miscast hybrid of Ferris Bueller and Rizzo the Rat as Bruce Banner, and Liv Tyler wrecking what was left of her career doing some Melanie Griffith simpering little-girl voice. Tim Roth looks like a polio survivor, William Hurt barely phones it in, the writing, score and cinematography is just a cavalcade of TV production values mediocrity.

The CGI is the least worst aspect, but even at that, they go with some ludicrous Emo Hulk and the 'Abomination' is essentially D.C's Doomsday, complete with elbow spikes.

Utterly missable. Just pretend it didn't happen until Ruffalo and Joss Whedon rescued the character.

The Martian 8/10

Quite liked, not too Hollywood technowankery. Still glosses over a bunch of details that would have made it: not entirely sure why he couldn't reset Farmsville; where was he pooping in the rover; Kate Mara's hair bugged me; orbital mechanics ex machina dramatica. But it was well paced, generally decently made, and Damon's performance was spot on.

Dinged for the unnecessary sweariness though. Don't they want to inspire young yoofs to go and conquer space for Murca?

Sand Castle 7/10

Another war is hell, also dusty, also whyyyyy?

Tightly made and well played, doesn't try to over-reach or hammer too hard on its theme. Quite a lot of technical / anachronistic goofs though, probably due to budget constraints.

Still, up there with the The Hurt Locker.

Did we find those WMDs yet?

If only there were a videobook version.

Yes, granted that a film is not a book, it's as close to a plausible as I can recall seeing. Close in space terms, anyway: I got very teeth grindy with all the untethered EVA. Fecker was pushing off the ship rather than clinging to it for dear life. Brick Wall

I watched this last night and maybe I just remember too much from the book and wanted to see how much they could have got away with onscreen.... apart from the main 4 characters and a pub there was very little from the book made it to the screen.... I was disappointed with the movie

T2 Trainspotting 5/10

Joining in the flood of T2 trainspotting reviews now there's a HD copy out Very Happy

7/10 for me. I did enjoy it, it was funny and although I think they overdid the nostalgic references to the first movie, that's probably what the (rapidly ageing) audience wants.

Where it fell apart a little for me was (my usual complaint) do not push the 2 hour mark unless you have something really really special. The first one was 90 minutes, so why make this longer, apart from every sodding film having to be 2 hours nowadays Rolling Eyes

Also they tried to wrap the film up a bit too much for my liking. Leave it on a bit of a cliffhanger and make another one in 20 years time Very Happy Also needs subtitles during Robert Carlyle's bits Whistle

Jane got a gun. 6/10.

Was a better film than I thought, and so was the acting and the characters. The downside was that the story line was not as strong or interesting as it could have been.

Possibly the closest film yet to a female 'unforgiven', I love sir Clint more, but I'd still like to put my hand on Natalie Portman's knee, or even let her sit on my knee. Wink

Bone Tomahawk 5/10

Bit of a weird one. Cowboys and cannibals. Cannibals with, yes, bone tomahawks. A ridiculous premise played absolutely straight. Slow paced, interspersed with some fairly visceral acts of acute violence. Not one for the ladies.

It almost works. Kurt Russel is excellent as always. The rest of the cast are Oh Right, That Guy From That One Thing. They do a decent enough job, but don't quite manage to sell their characters. Sean Young has an essentially pointless single brief scene in which she does. Very curious scripting.

Cinematography and score are decent, no more. And... there's that premise.

Eye candy is provided by Lili Simmons who is: pretty; awful. Grumpy frontier valley girl, no reason to want her to live. Modest frontier boobs are got out, once.

The straight-play continues into the final credits where an operatic voice literally back-expositions the film, reciting what you've just watched.

All rather peculiar. I'm honestly torn between thumbs up and down. Not one that I'd watch again either way.

Sunshine (2007, UK) - 7.5/10

A surpisingly well made sci-fi film with well picked cast. It's 2057, the Sun is dying, some lads decided to blow the A-bomb there to re-start it.

John Wick 2 2/10. Like a movie made from a particularly 3rd-rate arcade video-game. Unmitigated tedious drivel for sub-normal teenagers.

No, I didn't watch it to the end.

On Any Sunday 5/10 - obviously I'm aware of the film but had never actually watched it. It's interesting, although focusing on North American racing fairly irrelevant. The narration gets a bit annoying after a while, I suspect without a guest appearance from a certain someone this film would have been forgotten.

Captain America: Civil War 5/10

An hour too long, with a limp plot, a (literally) pathetic villain, and far too many sidekick-level characters sucking up time on pointless dialogue or character development that ultimately goes nowhere. Nobody has ever liked any version of Bucky, and Two Dull Flying Black Guys is two too many.

Not to get all "who would win in a fight[*]?" but the big set piece showdown should have been over in about 10 seconds. I know, comic book rules. There's little sense of drama when you know everyone is going to walk away (ish).

Spiderkid was actually all right - Parker was always supposed to be a Yoof.

The least-crazy Olsen needs to eat a sammich. Skullface is not a good look

Still better than anything D.C has done recently, mind.

[*] Lemmy.

The Big Short 8/10 - about the 2008 financial crash, and people who saw it coming (and made money). My rating's mainly based on the subject matter, they could have easily made a wolf of wall street and glamourised the whole thing, instead they attacked the banking system in a brutally honest way.
