Just got a call from the shop.
CBF600 - 2004 failed due to excessive play in rear suspension.

the chap is going to point it out when i pick up the bike and I have 2 weeks to get it back from a free MOT.


I will do my research now and try to figure out what the fix is, how easy it is and what tools i might need.

but if anyone wants to jump in with any help then please do.

Only really 3 places that could be the cause.
1) Shock top or bottom bush
2) Play in bearing on the part that the dog bones connect
3) Play in bearings in swinging arm.
All of these are simply a case of replacing the offending bearing(s).

I would advise replacing bearings as a set rather than individual bearings as if one has failed the others in the same part will be on their way out.

None of this is a difficult job.

i have found the parts for the swing arm.
and also the new roller/pins for the bottom of the shock.

what i can seem to find is the bush for the top of the shock.

still looking but if anyone can google fu...

I wouldn't be too hasty trying to find parts until you know which part is causing the issue.
Top of shock is least likely as more protected. The bearings and associated pins down low exposed to lots of water are more likely candidates.

How true you are.

Just been to collect the bike and the chap was very helpful indeed.
he showed me exactly what the issue is

the issue is that the bottom bolt was loose in its hole.
and there was movement between the bolt and the hanger.
you can see where the water has got in around the back of the nut.

So im going to take the bolt out and see what's going on.
chances are the bolt is worn and the bolt hole has been elongated.

i can easily replace the bolt...
and if necessary weld a small plate/steel washer to the hanger to re-enforce the bolt hole.

If it's elongated the hole then spot weld the bolt to the linkage to get it through the MOT.

But before doing that, check the bolt isn't seized in the shock... it's got to be able to rotate somewhere Wink

Easiest way to get it through an MOT would be to cut a shim out of a coke can or similar to sleeve the bolt in the bush/bearing.

The swingarm is very long on the CBF600 so any play is magnified at the wheel. Taking up a small bit of play with a shim can make a big difference.
