Posted: 14:31 - 26 May 2017 Post subject: Rewinding stator by hand |
|
|
Hello folks, hope everyone is getting to enjoy the great weather today...
After a 2 week exhaustive search I cannot find a stator to fit my bike (yup the CPI Sprint 125), so Im considering rewinding my stator myself because only 2 of the 3 phases are producing current and testing to ground shows a dead short.
Im following this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Rebuild-your-bike-s-expensive-stator/
With the crude tools I have to hand (no verniers, calipers, etc - yet) Im unable to accurately measure the wire on the windings so would i be safe using 0.95 mm wire as in the instructable? |

Do you have an engine code? If you're extracting it anyway, a part number? Or a picture of the engine and/or stator?
I ask because it'll almost certainly be one of the Honda CG or CB or Suzuki GN/GS copy engines and you should be able to get a stator to fit.
Given that cmpo want £25.41 for (e.g.) a CG-copy stator I wouldn't give up the search just yet, unless your time is cheaper than that. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

They're very good, but not particularly cheap.
I had them rewind and convert my TZR250 race stator to total loss.
Very neat job and will never go wrong again in my lifetime, so £100 plus VAT seemed good value when I lost a race entry due to the old one failing on the start grid. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Why didn't you hacksaw the charging coils off like most of the idiots in YPM seem to do? |
That's a bit harsh. There are some pretty knowledgeable people in the YPM, with good spannering and engineering skills. I learnt most of what I know about Yamaha 2 Strokes from racing with that lot.
West Country Windings was the company of choice for rewinding stators. Whilst it was going back for a rewind, I thought I'd get them to covert it too. It probably didn't increase power much, nor take much load off the crank, but having borrowed a total loss stator, I liked the way it spun up quicker. Lots of small increases can add up to a decent amount.
I ran the electrics on a 14.8V MiHm battery, which kept the PV response fresh. Most run 12V batteries after converting to total loss. The problem with this is that the charging circuit tolerance is 13.8V to 15.3V, so a 12V battery doesn't really offer enough juice once the charging circuit has been removed.
The F3 kit also uses a 14.8V Ni-Cad pack along with a total loss stator. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

The scrap crank on my bench where some bellend has welded the outer webs suggests otherwise. |
If your talking about the flat part of the web being built up with weld to fill the circle, those were made illegal in the class years ago.
I take it you understand why people used to do this? It tended to be certain tuners who did this back in the day, not the riders.
I managed 5 years with the only mechanical engine failure being when the stator failed, so between my engine builder, for both engines and my twice yearly rebuilds, we must have been doing something right. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.
