I'm diddling about with a front end swap (DR650 on to GS500). I have pressed out the GS stem which fits nicely into the DR bottom yoke - except it's a tad too short (because the DR bottom yoke is thicker).
I have skimmed the lip off the top of the DR yoke that means I can now get 3 turns on the top bearing castle nut but that's it.

My option would then appear to be
a)leave as is and test it out on some farm land I have access to.
b) Machine a custom stem - recommendations ?
c) press stem out again and machine a rebate into the bottom of the DR yoke (again any recommendations..)
d) Give up and go and do something more sensible with my time

Cheers

James

That would make no difference, it would still only contact 3 turns of the threads.

Hi Pete. I don't think that's the problem. As it stands the top yoke sits on the castle nut which is partially screwed onto the stem. Machining a relief in it would be more elegant but I don't think would add to the integrity. BTW the bolt through the top yoke into the stem is good and I can get some decent torque on that.

I'll get a picture hopefully later this weekend..

Indeed.

There are a few ways to extend the stem. Many use a 1" BSC thread so it's easy to get things sorted at a Bicycle frame builders.

Some can braze an extension to the top of the treads and cut a new thread others would cut down the stem, machine up a stepped extension that fits inside the original stem and plug weld or braze it in place.

If you could supply the materials and a good drawing I may be able to turn you up a stem to suit.

This is dependent upon me having the correct changewheels for the thread pitch you need. I can make changewheels but it is a bit of a faff for a one-off job.

Edit: Or to make it really easy, Change to a thread size that you can get a die for and I'll just turn that bit down to the major diameter. Could do that really easily.

Thanks for all the ideas and the offers. Good to know there's some options if I come unstuck..

Cheers
