In a bit of a rush but I had a quick go at it.. ND filter was delivered today so might help with the final look I'm after.. (click for better image) I haven't tweaked any levels/colour as yet, just a test run. Hoping the ND filter will help with the sky too. Going to stack a CPL and ND filter but any tips on how to get that blurred background but clean sharp bike would be appreciated.

Edit, first attempt with ND8 and EV set to -2.0

A couple of best results from my feeble attempts at mountain photography from the last Euro trip:

I suppose the results have more to do with great scenery than any skill with a camera on my part. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

How do you think you can improve it? (I usually have a few ideas with any of my own images)
What are you trying to show with the image, what's made you go for the selective colour?
What settings have you used? ____________________ My Flickr |

I'm not convinced there's enough detail in the bike itself. the bike is very dark, seems to destroy the detail.

I didn't use selective colour. I did need to adjust the white balance and I wonder if that's made you think that I used selective colour. Turning up the brightness on my monitor and there seem to be some odd colour patches near the casings and radiator. Overall I think I've made the image too dark and lost detail.

Not a lot of options on the camera. EV -2.0, ISO 100, Shutter 1s and it was tripod mounted for stability. I did have the ND 8 filter on too.
I took an over exposed version which if I fix the white balance shows a lot better detail. I think I should probably remove the filter, shorten the exposure, set the EV to 0.0 and try again - I've got the filters on because I was trying to do the blur ones whilst on the bike. |
The image looked like it was black and white to me, except for the Arrow badge, and the yellow on the floor. I could be mistaken though.
Personally I wouldn't have used an ND filter and a long exposure for that shot. I'm sure you know why longer exposures can be useful, I'm not sure what it adds in your situation (other than extra faff and set up time).
I'm far from an expert, I don't feel the background was interesting and the bike's just been plonked in the middle of it. Get out and shot more. Shoot it close up, shoot it wide. See what works and what doesn't. It's the best way to learn. ____________________ My Flickr |

The colour is fairly flat, this was the original shot, scaled down for here.

My crop selection poor? Looking at that picture now, perhaps if the bike was at the far end of the white building the eye would follow the wall to the bike?

I agree. Bad decision but as I said, I was trying some blur moving shots earlier so there was little faff or setting up.

I was trying for an industrial vibe to go with the exposed frame on the bike.. I guess that didn't work

Yes, I'll be doing more, thanks for at least taking an interest. I do look at everyone's pictures and try and learn from them. ____________________ Honda CBF125 ➝ NC700X

I'd would of put the bike the other side of the crack so not so close to the building, exposed a little higher for the bike, move to the left slightly and a little lower. Framed in camera so you have a tighter shot on the bike and only the building in the background.
Of course if you took a panning shot of your bike doing a wheelie with nobody riding it, that would make a good photo |

Nice shot, but think i'd have toned down the colour strength a bit:
https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/ruby-rise_zpsby3w1tsh.jpg
Still retains a good depth of colour in the sky, but looks more natural. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
