Mocking the custom subframe, this will support the seat and provide the mounts for the number plate, rear lights and indicators.

https://s15.postimg.org/txna8usaj/20170306_171107.jpg

The two supports are made from drawn steel tubing, slugged to fit internally into the CG frame and internally into the subframe tubing. The bars have been created by bending the tube into a perfect U and then cutting in half. The tube is frogmouthed to weld to the frame made in the last update. The frame only has to support the back of the seat and the plate hanger, so it is tremendously over engineered.

https://s24.postimg.org/hgsfmy1l1/20170306_175929.jpg

The frame tacked in position, ready for welding.

https://s16.postimg.org/72hbjma11/20170306_180134.jpg

How the seat sits. The subframe follows the curve of the seat nicely.

https://s1.postimg.org/4tgx11xwv/20170306_190742.jpg

fabricating a centre brace for the seat, using this to mount the seat down.

https://s14.postimg.org/pxzvepy7l/20170306_190804.jpg

Seat mounted. It is supported on the shoulders of the tank, the centre brace and the rear subframe so it should be good.

Looking good so far. Cracking workshop you have.

What type are the paramotors mounted on the wall? Always fancied one, especially after selling my microlight.

Nice work Ben. I'm sure you could make a living at this with the skill you obviously have.

It's very good work, but don't give up the day job, even if it's what everyone else is doing nowadays. Keep it as a hobby. I've seen some amazingly skilled work from the ranks of amateur painters and artists of all sorts recently. Just because you're good at something, doesn't mean it can support you. Motorbikes are like reggae music. No money in it, and for the few for whom there is, they've worked their fingers to the bone and it hasn't been an easy ride.

Trick is, I'm not a one man band. There are a few of us and between us we are quite capable of building pretty much anything. This particular one just happens to be my personal project/commission. Each of us has things going on, we pitch in/offer ideas/assistance between us whenever help is needed.

A project that really needs finishing is a custom framed Woods style street tracker. The frame was originally built in the unit on a home made frame jig.

https://s2.postimg.org/el4qxemix/20170124_161906.jpg

Anyhoo.

https://s23.postimg.org/4tpq5qgln/20170516_161215.jpg

https://s3.postimg.org/k8m6h3zoz/20170516_161129.jpg

Frame/swingarm/engine mounts/fork bottoms are powdercoated gunmetal:

https://s18.postimg.org/e50afhrwp/frameenginemount.jpg

Wheels are satin black shod with Shinko SR-241 trials tyres. Forks are slugged 40mm with these:

https://s21.postimg.org/tptbavi2f/fork_plugs.jpg

A set of fork plugs which are machined from stainless billet to fit the tops of the forks. This matches the 40mm lift from the 360mm shocks in the back.

Bike still wears the dummy tank for the minute, the nearly complete final tank is having a specialist lacquer applied that is designed to provide a long lasting finish with bare metal.

The sidepanels are prototyped, finals are to be made from 3mm aluminium. The one on the bike in these pics is a (very!) rough first template to see if existing mountings could be used rather than making new ones.

Numerous, there is even one custom built out of a Honda CR85 engine with the gearbox modified to run a propshaft. They are now in storage as we needed more room to build bikes haha.

Just realised I never posted the pictures (apart from the motor) of how this bike started out.

This project would have been ten times easier if the bike had been in reasonable condition, but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

I.E CGs are expensive now. This one was obtained cheap, and the bloke it came from could not believe that I wanted it!

Fuckin gurt velocity stack on the carb, bent up some plates to fit behind the stack and then bulge out to cover the battery box/indicator relay.

Are those trials bike tyres on it?

If so is it because it is going to have some reasonable off road ability when it's completed, or is it for some other reason?

I need someone to really spell it out to me why off road tyres are cool and look cool on a road bike, and how they improve handling and braking over road tyres? I just don't get it?

They don't improve handling and braking, and that's why they are cool, I'd imagine.

Personally I think the Hipster fad only has a year or two max now anyway, and I think the next one will be mid '90s sportsbikes.

As at the start of the post, the bike is being built for two reasons, the chap wants something unusual and reasonably unique that can ride 10 miles to work. He also wants something capable of following his nipper on his mini dirtbike about on trails in the summer.

Off road abilities should be reasonable, it has a 40mm ride height increase, high level pipe, big grippy tires and home made bashplate. The CG motor is also very well suited to offroad use, with a decent midrange delivery compared to the revvier OHC motors Honda use in the XR etc.

If you squint in these pics, there is also a modded footbar shod with trials pegs.

Got hold of a slightly less potato camera.

Was going to extend the sidestand, ended up making a new one. My friend Gareth doing a stand up job with the welder. It is 80mm longer than standard and very heavy duty. The bashplate is now complete and welded also.

Absolutely great work with this project. Pretty inspiring stuff. Hoping to learn a lot about this sort of thing as I go on the YBR classic I am working on. How many of these projects have you done in the past?

Keep up the great work.

Great work, and I'm also loving the details. The bashplate looks very nicely made too, and would like to have seen some work in progress pics of it too.

The bike has plenty of style and the flat tracker look is cool for a road going bike too. Im sure it'll have the required amount of off road ability too.

I guess when I see a small Honda single paired with knobbly tires, I just expect and feel more affection towards TL and RTL models, or anything with a 21'' front wheel and thus less road bike practicalities.

A few, I like doing CGs as full builds as the bike is simple and I know them well. However I do spread my wings a bit when it comes to diversity. I'm a fan of nicking other bits from higher end bikes and fitting them to base bikes. A few Frankensteins:

https://s14.postimg.org/seg8dwua9/10352341_10153586376633485_3670381019175366636_n.jpg

Diversion 600'R'. A timing advanced, 4-1 performance piped, over carbed, Thundercat suspended Divvy on some sticky rubber.

The 'other' CG:

https://s1.postimg.org/wevx6i09r/12063527_10153625824208485_1975376208278750408_n.jpg

An extreme cafe racer with keyless hidden ignition, nothing that wasn't needed. Apart from a steering damper.

The sleeper GSX:

https://s9.postimg.org/ayya3hx8v/17554480_10155143772573485_7943854224107756547_n.jpg

Stock bodywork, different front end, different engine, different rear end. 1156cc Bandit motor running RF900 adjustable suspension on modern rubber.

The halo bike:

https://s29.postimg.org/z6pfpr2s7/14067690_10154433518158485_6822564641077251627_n.jpg

Built to run a 9 second 1/4 mile. Huffing on a Garrett t25/28 hybrid turbo, 210rwhp, 159lb/ft.

The nitrous Bandit.

https://s9.postimg.org/qye1gat2n/14079516_10154433519053485_8520512954067017568_n.jpg

My friend crashed his Bandit12 about a month before the Bulldog. The bike was okayish, but had hit the deck at 90. We had intended to convert it to a nitrous drag bike before, but there was a bit more work to do. The bike would go on to run a mid 10 gagging on a 75hp shot on a custom built 8" over arm. Not bad considering he still had a broken wrist.

https://s8.postimg.org/a7oeve2cl/13507233_10154264352338485_7112664077818370519_n.jpg%20

There are many others. This is the first time I have taken on a paid commission, so the stops are truely fucking out.

Enough bollocks, moAr sidepanel.

Chappy wanted some numbers on it, 68 being the year he was born. He also wanted it to be the called the BG125 scrambler, which is nice of him as BG are my initials.

There is also a polished stainless strap holding the cables out of the front wheel. Turns out the new owner is not a fan of mudguards. The comprehensive air filter setup is cut out of some tights and elastic banded on, because function, and there is just enough exhaust bandage to stop the exhaust boiling the fuel in the float bowl of the carb. This is a problem also experienced by the TL125.

The seat unit was hit with plastic primer, high build primer, more plastic primer, white, plastic primer, gloss black and then a satin lacquer. The plastic primer is to give some flexibility to the paint, most of these bikes will have cracked seat unit paint almost straight away, as the seat flexes considerably under load. The plastic allows the paint to move with the fibreglass and hopefully will stop it looking like a road map of New York after ten minutes. The big patch on the seat is from the lacquer still curing, I got impatient waiting to get pictures!

Thank you for the positive comments. Although I am being paid to build this and am therefore contractually obliged to finish it, it is always nice to receive encouragement!
