So I've been out of a full time job for nearly a year now after quitting my last role, for the organisation being such a politically correct POS waste of money.

I've just seriously started looking for a replacement role and places like reed are full of absent minded recruiters. One issue that I've been dealing with is the 'please send a copy of your passport'. Now I'm not an employment law specialist but I do know how to google.

Under the employers guide for checking right to work it says that the document must be hand checked and not simply a copy, so little value in sending across my passport.

At the end of the day, the recruitment agency is not my employer, so they don't need to have it. correct? I guess I'm not comfortable sending my ID across the unencrypted interwebz.

Is there a better more secure method for checking your eligibility to work?
What have you done in the past?
Are you now wondering how many rogue employment agency employees have sold your passport on the black market / deep web?

Most recruitment agencies are actually providing manpower substitution. The 'employer' pays them, they pay you.

So yes, they are your employer.

I do know what I'm talking about. Ask me about 'parity' and how it applies after 12 weeks, etc....

Well reed are your employer. They pay you and your tax etc. And they have to prove to the company they place you in that you have a right to work in the Uk and also have passed any checks the company may require... (have seem them totally fuck this up and around 20 people marched out of the building by the police...That's banking for you Laughing

Personal experience of Reed is they are shit at doing the job.... Daughter has been through them 4 times now (company only uses them) and each time has been a farce and a half.... Even though she has worked for the CO before and they have requested her for the role... Each time takes about 6 to 8 weeks of fucking around trying to find out who is actually dealing with the role at reed and what they require.
End of the day if they need proof it is taken to the local branch for them to send on... No passport here....

Yes they are, I am the workers boss but I'm not their employee.

I use agency's daily and they are responsible for doing all the necessary checks on the staff I recruit through them

So if said recruitment agency is my employer and they are responsible for confirming my identity then how is them having a photocopy of my passport, not a photocopy taken themselves after having inspected the original legal, or correct procedure?

There are many things that people do that are wrong. Bitching about it won't get you a job, though.

Your passport isn't going to get sold on the internet after you give a recruitment agency a photocopy of it.

Asking people to send a photocopy of it sounds like an easy way to weed out the time wasters who don't have the necessary documents. If the photocopy appears kosher then they'll invite you to their offices to show them your passport and then everything will be cool.

I completely agree, it is an easy way to weed out the time wasters. Agree that they are out there to make money, yes I am probably being difficult, still I don't really want to be giving out such a crucial piece of information to someone I've spoke on the phone with for 2 minutes.

I'm not saying that I'm worried about identity theft, but given how easy it is to find information about almost anyone, I'm not sure I want to make it easier.
