You often see on engines where a head gasket has failed between the water ways and the fire ring of a cylinder, that the valves and combustion chamber look very clean compared to the other cylinders.

Its not going to be a huge flood of coolant into the cylinder normally, but a slow dribble that probably collects when the engine is left and then cold started later.

On FI engines, I believe that sometimes the water/meth injection systems also do leave the internals looking cleaner than they otherwise would be.

What I'd like to know is if it's possible for some kind of fuel additive to clean injector tips and nozzles as well as an ultrasonic bath would?

The most common issue on 'modern' injection systems I see is inferior fuel, and or poor filtration.
The carbon build up is not so bad if the engine is run at it's rated load there should not be any build up.
But wear in injectors is difficult to 'wash off'. Smile

Obvious placebo, Perkins are never smooth.

I did once use this product called Revive which you sprayed into the air intake as close to the compressor side of the turbo as possible while the engine was running at a series of set RPMs, turned it off halfway through, let it soak for a bit and turn it on again and rev some more.

It filled my whole street with thick clouds of steam and left a dirty skid mark behind the car Laughing but it fixed an issue I had in my turbo where the vanes would stick momentarily causing hesitation. Thumbs Up

Probably dindunuffin to injectors mind.
