(One day? Why bother. Amsterdam? Go by public transport, it's not a biking destination. Does your bike need adjusting for riding on the right? Yes, move the ash tray to the other side. HTH.)

Why not go and look at some of the WW2 stuff on Frances coast? There's a new bunker exhibition just opened too. I'd love to do that myself. You won't have to stray too far either.

France has some dumb laws such as needing to carry a breath test on you and needing reflective stickers of a certain size on your helmet. It's well explained on the interwebs so give it a Google.

The breathalyser thing is on hold as far as I'm aware. I haven't used the reflective helmet stickers, but I did carry some with me. Didn't get stopped for anything, maybe it's one of those things they'll throw in if they do you for something else. Only other thing I carried was a hi-viz vest (not worn), which you must wear if you break down at the roadside. I didn't even make any adjustments to my headlamp beam, but wasn't riding after dark. Got a Euro/GB sticker on the no. plate, and that's it.

The direct roads to Amsterdam are pretty boring but it's not far.
Quite a small city it felt a bit like York to me.
You can find places to squeeze bikes in by trees etc.
There's a lot of smackheads and dodgy looking swarthy types about. Which is why I'd agree it's not worth taking bike unless as part of a longer trip.

France is a better option perhaps just follow the coast with such a short time.
Outside of big towns French roads are relatively empty compared to southern UK. Much better area to build up confidence than plunging into the melé of trams and cyclists in Amsterdam

You'd do much better to not take your bike on the ferry and then just take the train from Hoek van Holland to Amsterdam.

The roads there are dull and wherever you park your bike in Amsterdam, you'll be worrying if a British group of 'lads on tour' have been messing around with it.

Cycled from Hoek van Holland to Rotterdam but got quite lost. Laughing
