For instance, many people want to have a new car, with a 17 plate for example, but are prepared to drive a 1.4 corsa to achieve that. I'd rather have a much older BMW.
For many, a 4 bedroom suburban house is their definition of having 'made it'. People were horrified when my partner and I bailed out to live in a field.
Happiness is being comfortably able to afford the basics in life and having a little left over to spend enjoying yourself. How you spend that should be your choice and no one elses. Otherwise I'd have to sell the contents of my garage and lease a white 116i. |
I see what you are getting at, but what if a 17 plate 1.4 corsa makes that person happy? It's impossible to define what happiness is because it's subjective to the individual.
Happiness to me would be to have Dr Dre (hip hop artist and headphone entrepreneur) level wealth which would enable me to do basically whatever I wanted, when I wanted. If happiness to someone else is to mug off the rat race and live a comfortable and frugal life then if anything I am jealous you have a mindset like that that is happy with that. But it doesn't mean one should look up or down at the other - it's just stuff. |
Oh I agree entirely! If a 1.4 corsa is that persons hearts desire then that's great. If however they want a newer reg plate than next door and only have X a month, then sacraficing the quality of the car in order to purchase a newer one, in order to have a new reg plate has to be the ultimate example of doing things for social standing rather than personal satisfaction.
I also find it interesting that people's idea of happiness is money, and stuff.
If you had Dre levels of wealth and didnt need to work ever again, what would you do with it? That's the answer to happiness and I bet you dont actually need that level of wealth to achieve most of it. |

No, I think it's obvious to all, it's not how far I or anybody else slips below some arbitrary imaginary line, but, it's clearly important to you, perhaps you already feel you have slipped below said line, and are now seeking reassurance that there are indeed other pond life swimming around with you..
Smacks of a certain degree of insecurity coupled with an unhealthy dose of narcissism.
Other than that, has to be one of the most pointless subjects on bcf, and, that's going some. |
Not so pointless you couldn't find the time to respond. |
That's because I initially took it as a joke thread, but, it appears you're actually taking this seriously, who'd have thought it !! Anyhow, slow day at work, so, yeah why not reply, but, yeah I stand by my assertion that this is really a pointless subject.. Funny, how you haven't addressed what else I said, and fixated on the pointless comment, which, kind of bears out what else i posted really ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |

I think the majority of people are more concerned about just having a happy life with a secure job, a few toys and hobbies and maybe the odd holiday/break from the daily grind to recharge the batteries. None of that shows concern over social status. I think being worried about how others perceive you is a bit sad really.
With possessions, if I wanted a Ferrari for example, and was in the position of being able to afford one, I'd buy it for me to enjoy, not to impress others. I'd buy it because it's a good sports car, fun to drive (on track), and I find its looks pleasing to my eye. I'd buy it because I'm curious to see what all the hype is about. I wouldn't buy it because no one else in my street could afford one, that's for sure.
For me, I know what I like and want, and don't care what others think of my choices and decisions. If they feel they are better than me, then I'm happy for them. As long as I can get on unmolested with my own choices and life, I don't mind that. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Have you tried not being in your work/income demographic?
I mean, if people who matter think you don't matter, perhaps they have a point.
I'm not even suggesting that you try to increase your income, but if you were to develop a chronic bad back, you'd be square in the sights of both Labour and the Racialists for their uncosted promises of jam tomorrow.
Ribenapigeon wrote: | In fact I would say your status is entirely related to how much effort those with political power will give to considering how to get your vote. |
That's an unusual definition of status, but one with which I happen to agree.

I have a chronic bad back, but don't see any of them targeting me with freebies
Maybe I'm a mug, and should make more of my problem ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
