If by 'abroad' you mean France, and if you want to stray strictly legal, you need a heap of stuff:

It's not mentioned, but I believe you also need a spare pair of glasses if you need your vision corrected, whether you normally wear either glasses or contact lenses.
They're particularly useful for spotting 20mph (32kph) signs so that you don't get caught doing 39mph (63kph). ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
