|

Yesterday I purchased a Kawasaki ER-500 C1 locally from a private seller. Condtion is good for age, with reasonable service / MOT history and low mileage (20k). Price was decent, and as I sorely need a new bike for my daily work commuting I bought it.
No issues on journey home, and started first time this morning and rode for a couple of miles. Engine runs fine and all lights working, although the horn sounds little wonky (fluctuates pitch). Tried start it again an hour later and nothing worked! Luckily there was a garage less than a mile away so I pushed it there. Verdict - dead battery, showed bad voltage and failed "drop" test. I bought a new one to install and all has been fine riding to work and back home again.
The only issue I was made aware of before purchasing was a faulty rev counter... As the speedometer works it's something I can live without, but looking online today I see that this is a common fault whenever a regulator rectifier goes bad on this model. Typically, it cooks the battery takes out the rev counter and possibly the CDI also. I contacted the seller again about it's history and was told that the rev counter did not work when he bought it. Since then (2015), it has clocked about 1,500 miles.
As the battery failed so suddenly today I am concerned that the reg/rec may not be functioning as it should. Using my (cheap) multi meter, here are the readings obtained from the new battery terminals:
13.5 volts with engine off
14.6 volts with engine idle / all lights off
15.2 volts with engine idle / full beam on
Applying throttle is not raising these values (I was seeing an occasional drop if anything). Are these figures within a safe range? Superficially, the bike is running nicely but I don't want to be in a situation where the new battery dies prematurely or worse another electrical component fails.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Cheers

Cheers for clearing that up PolarBear.
Bike seems to be running / charging happily for a few rides now, but as I said I've not needed to use the head light or revved the bike hard. Since sticking the full beam on ups the voltage to ~15.8v, that's a little too high.
Interested to see if the new regulator improves the reading. If so, great. If not, I have peace of mind it's doing it's job OK and a spare |
