Saw this app on another group and it looks to be fairly good. It has an algorithm to select twisties instead of dual carriageways and can also give you random routes if you have no idea where you want to go and just want to go for a 100mile ride. The random route is a bit iffy without assistance but it's still in development. You also only get one free county, whole of the UK is 9quid but that's good enough for us for now.

Going to go try out the suggested interesting route to the cake shop now....

I am also trying this app out at present.

Went for the first ride out with it today. Just selected a 100 mile round trip, spcified direction of route as 'West' (into Wales) and left. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised. I know most of the places on the route it proposed anyway, but it did pretty well in selecting a reasonably sensible route with a few of the roads I would have chosen myself.

Time estimate was reasonable (slower than reality, but only by 20 mins or so) and it was able to guide me to an en-route petrol station when required. The navigation instructions are comparable to google maps and gave no issue, although traffic alerts/ closed roads/ roadworks etc are not visible to the app as it works on an offline map. Power consumption was also better than Google maps, which is my default choice.

Cons at present: The default volume is too low for my shitty earphones and I had to stop to turn it up once onto NSL roads.

Also, the app selects routes exclusively on 'twistiness' as a criteria. This is great in the countryside, but it has an irritating habit in town of trying to direct you off the main roads and town centre bypasses into 30mph residential areas as they are obviously curvier than the dual carriageway route.

It wasn't an issue for me as I knew when it was being stupid, but if I didn't know the area it would have taken me into the centre of the nearest town on the way through to the countryside rather than the sensible road choice.

Finally, at a few places it told me to take a 'slight right followed by a left' or similar, when actually it wanted you to go straight on. Not a biggie, but it did catch me out at one junction.

All in all, I'd give it a 3.5/5 in it's current form and I will give it another go on Monday to see if it can find a more interesting commute home (don't trust it enough for the outwards leg where there is a time constraint)

It has the potentail to be good if they heed the advice of customers and I will seriousy consider using it next time I go away with the bike and have a few hours to kill in a new area.

my tomtom has a similar twisty ride thing. I once experienced it with she who is occasionally consulted on the back on a leeds to doncaster run. My usual instinct is head in the general squires and then turn south at some point, it's all good if I stay off the a1, but was in west leeds suburbia and wasn't sure how to make an escape. I thought I had the satnav set to avoid motorways, but evidently not. It had us zigzagging through housing estates. When I recognised the edge of wakefield I just turned the device off.

I have been informed that if I am inclined spend a morning tearing through the terraces then I had better find other ways to differentiate myself from the local pedbois. [/i]

Just used Calimoto today. Its great for some back road bimbling and i reckon if you wanted to go on a B-road trip it would be the nuts. In just one morning i got a great little tour of local back roads i would never have been on normally. One thing occurred to me not bike related was it would be really good if you were house hunting in the country. I saw loads of properties i cant afgord. Still my finances aside on this first look im happy to recommend this app.
