PostPosted: 19:34 - 31 Jul 2017    Post subject: YHA in the West & Wales Reply with quote

I`m trying to sort out a little trip to the West and Wales.
I`ve decided the mighty Hyosung GT 250r is going to be my bike of choice.
I chose the Hyosung rather than my new(ish) Honley RX3 because I have not had enough time on the Honley yet to know if I can trust it.
So I`m thinking early September, starting from Birmingham-onto-Leominster-onto-somewhere south of Aberystwyth for a long weekend.

I`ve decided to use YHA hostels if they`ll have me because I`m not made of money and a bed in the dorm will be less than £20 or £30 for a double room (two bunk).
So it looks like the Pepperami 250 tour is going to go ahead Thumbs Up
I`ve even kept a few dates free early September to ensure I have the time off from work.
Has anyone used any of the YHA hostels in Welsh Wales?
Any good experiences? any bad experiences?
Any alternative recommendations such as cheap B&B`s?

EDIT : Mr Grr666 , you have pm!

Welsh Bicknor YHA is absolutely beautiful. 100% recommended. Book well ahead.

Technically not in Wales though and maybe a little far South for you.

This chap has a camping barn opposite the cafe. A few of us stopped there for a couple of nights a while back:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Eric+Jones'+Climbers'+Café/@52.9553504,-4.1258088,12.65z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x913d149785c14d02!8m2!3d52.9429359!4d-4.1220805

Was pretty cheap, very basic, but the cafe was good, and only half hour from the Llanberis Pass etc, so you're right near the top scenery. Porthmadog just down the road with supermarkets, chippy etc too. -Matt- might remember more about the details.

Christ is that place still going??!! Went climbing in Tremadog 30 years ago and spent a couple of nights at 'Mad Erics' - IIRC it was 50p a night to sleep in teh barn on a random mattress. People climbed all over the roof and ceiling as practice before lights out.. Happy days. Cool

Did you decide on going with YHA? If so, did you sign up to a membership that gets you a discount on your stays?

Not sure where you are heading, but we went up to Wrexham, then down to Swansea. Highly recommend the A4069 Black Mountain Pass, amazing road, watch out for sheep 🐑

B4500 from Chirk runs along the river, lovely road, although I’d suggest turning around and heading back once you hit Pandy, road gets a bit “rural” after that.

A470/A487 not bad either, there’s a lot I don’t remember off the top of my head, but those definitely stood out.

The B4500 is a local road to me. Watch for batshit crazy farmers that have no comprehension of brakes. Not unusual to find them in the oncoming lane either. People do get squished on that road.

The B4391, which is easily accessible from the A483 and runs (partly over the A212) to Ffestiniog in Snowdonia, is a cracking piece of tarmac.

I looked at YHA hostels, but they were all fully booked.
I ended up booking into a couple of privately owned hostels.
I'll put the links up later.
I'm gonna be spending time around the south of Snowdonia.

This was the one with the huge forest on the one side right? Sure we did this one too off the back of one of your recommendations in another thread, awesome road

Peppers has made plans and bookings Smile Thumbs Up

My launch point is Birmingham.
the first day I am hopefully giving the A5 and the A4086 a go , ending up in Cwmy-y-Glo ?

The Second and third days are from Cwmy-y-glo to Llanddewi Brefi via a number of roads including the A498, A487, A485 and any B-roads I choose on the way

The forth day is back to Brum via Leominster and the M5.

When I am touring/traveling, I have a bad habit of getting the bit between my teeth and pushing on to the destination.
I forget to stop and take pictures.
I will try to take a few pictures this time to add to my write up when I get back.

If anyone`s in the locale (highly unlikely), I would be happy to share a bacon roll and a cup of tea Thumbs Up

Just so you know it's going to piss it down, roads should be fairly quiet as it'll deter most of the tourists, just keep a distance from Betws-y-coed (packed no matter the weather) If you're using the A5 you might as well do the evo triangle, it's relatively short but is a cracking run.

Yeah, after going past Capel Celyn.

There's also an alternative way from Bala to Ffestiniog for those that prefer a more sedate single track road as well, views are better.
