Afternoon all,

Anyone have any experience with buying police seized cars that come with no car keys. Just wondering how much of a ball ache it is getting a new key from the manufacturer and whether it's worth the effort.

I'll do the research and find the answer myself if not. Some pretty nice looking cars online that are only up to £40.00... makes me think it's a complete fucking nightmare and people are buying to sell scrap.

Any advice welcome.

id imagine if you have an invoice, V5 and a good telephone/email manner it shouldn't be a problem. though i wouldn't fancy my chances knowing that some crook still has a key to my new motor and might want to claim it back?

id probably want the lock barrels changing for peace of mind... and on a modern car that would need some electrical jiggery-pokery to sort out the pairing between ECU and key...

possibly get yourself a bargain but you'd have to work for it...

So an email stating "Give me some new keys, my good man, and make haste about it" is more likely to evoke a response than "Mandem din gimme no key, ave u got 1 plz bro?"

When I got burgled, the thief took a set of keys, including one to our Toyota Yaris (2002 model). In order to get a new ignition barrel and door locks, it would cost £1,250 on a car that we part-exed for £1,200. Apparently the locks or keys were patented or something.
There was no remote locking. I guess there was an immobiliser. Dunno. It seemed like a basic key to me.
Unless you can source one from a scrappy and do it yourself?

Depends on the car. Oddly some newer vehicles are easier to programme keys for, check which ones are getting stolen a lot Razz Research it thoroughly though, I'd imagine it's prohibitively expensive with a lot of models.

As with anything like this, assume you're not the first person to have the idea. I would venture that the people buying the cars are the same sort of people that buy project vehicles on the expectation that it won't take much time or money to finish.

If a vehicle that should be worth £4k is going for £1k, why isn't a locksmith buying them all, sorting the locks, and selling them on for a tidy profit?

Any auto locksmith will be able to read the lock code, cut a key and program it to the car, this will disable the old key, electronically anyway.

They will want proof it's your car, receipts, V5 etc

Thanks responses. Thumbs Up

I have a guy near me that programs keys, so might be worth a dabble.

They'll usually delete any associated keys so although the old key will unlock the door (and set the alarm off) and turn the ignition, it won't start.

Don't go to dealer. You'll need a new lock set, écu transponder pickup etc

A mobile indépendant will take out or if really good, get the code by picking the lock, make a key and program it.

A Vw golf last week cost £180 for entry, new key and programming.

If it's an recent Alfa then it'll cost you at least £350 per key.

Wanted to hear from people who have done it in the past. There might be more to it than the websites let on. Especially those sites that use the phrase... "Price on Request" - translated to: "We are going to pull your pants down".
