We'll see. The tuning is a pretty known quantity for these. I tend to time them up for fully advanced and let the retarded bit sort itself out.
If it's a PITA, there is a bolt-on boyer digital that goes right in where the points backing plate sits so the dizzy stays.
Thing is, the points will work down to 9v. Anything under 12v and a boyer box spits the dummy.
I've seen more brit bikes left stranded because of electronic ignition tantrums than anything else. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Loving the strip down pics.
That engine (from someone who doesn't come from a background of and is non familiar with Brit bike motors)
actually has some quite nice design features in places, and looks of sturdy construction instead of ultra thin Japanese castings etc. There's some un desirable features too to my eyes, but you can't have everything.
I'm actually amazed also how in modern car engines, some features that were very good 30,40 or 50years ago are not universally adopted in all new engines made today. |

Bit of a blow.
Just got word back that the overbored 350 crankcases are unsuitable for the 612 conversion due to inadequate webbing reinfocement. The power would warp them.
Where to now. ENgines are hard to find.
Moral dilemma time:
What I COULD do is reassemble this short engine* which is fine and has a lot of new bits, including piston, rings and a freshly rebuilt head, buy a complete 500 bullet off gumtree/wherever with the correct cases, swap over the short engine, change it on the V5 then sell it for what I paid. I keep the cases to build my own bike.
If I do, do I tell them it's based on a set of bored-out 350 cases?
* Engine by itself, minus the gearbox and primary drive. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Well, given the engine I have here is unsuitable for a 612 conversion, I may as well reassemble it. it's a perfectly good 500 motor.
I'm watching some bikes on ebay, both are basket cases. Either will do for what I need. If I were to get both, I could build my bike AND a second bike to sell. See how that goes.
Anyway, reassembling this one will be good practice for the main event and a complete engine should go for nearly as much as I paid for this bike if marketed intelligently. I've taken pics of the reassembly to show a potential buyer as the engine wont have been run when it's sold
First thing. Remember this cheese head?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e_dokH4OaHbxaoPW_H48BgdP32jbw7GiNNbiLy5E5QLbuvNEyUbr_93ljCsdcg9XztNstI2fmWI8bXTUxaJyct91HC2E5BPGwe9RA9DxPZb0XcdFn9uzLLPwmy9_KdZca8GxwZhszg=w665-h886-no-
So. I think a thread insert would probably be more appropriate. I already have an M6 kit so cost is almost zero.
Tap it out, it was already stripped to buggery anyway so I didn't drill it.

Shiny new insert.

Don't want this stud dropping down into the tappet chamber so threadlock. I'll also use a standard nut with a nylok nut above it. This stud doesn't really see much load. It's there to hold the barrel in place while you put the head on/off.

About an hours worth of gasket scraping with a putty knife, then a scalpel blade then a spray of "get yer gas-kit off" and a run over with a non-stick pan sponge. Then maintainance spray and a good wipe over to remove any remnants of gasket and gasket remover. Looking highly ship-shape in my oppinion! Be a shame to sell it.

Also given the crank assembly a wipe over with a clean cloth and maintainance spray.

VERY clean piston with new rings.

The previous builder had assembled the crankcase with just the gasket. I reckon this is wishful thinking so I'm using some goo as well. This permabond stuff is REALLY nice to use. It remains liquid until compressed in an oxygen free atmosphere so it'll only go solid where it's squashed, any squeeze-out will wash away. It is quite expensive but a bottle lasts a long time.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/WNuqTIBCbGOze72pypVjBNFVbIWvhr1O9dE2v5tI6tKuvWQaOjC-lI43VgJlQUdEWPAK8bn8MB63MSt-MUJPYMIn3ZuhfDrz-hCzxhp3ipUSbBeueRQhSYxXHp3QonHYxJ-WNg9mNQ=w1178-h883-no
I apply a bead from the bottle, spread it out with a gloved finger then wipe round the inside edge with a cloth round my finger to prevent any squeezing out to the oil containing parts.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OeILkp51A6dsBSF60hfPV_5WZ5m3ow6mMBBO7xiqQWwaTbqFxD7Z6fEYTrqaiqvroEFuUG16bKTYqG9mNWcG-tJ05rR16msZtcrq3s_u0SdoblY6eCBrw_WLhVsrQgJ1Mv3VCesJQw=w1178-h883-no
Other half.

New gasket off ebay. Notice this motor has dowels at the top left and bottom right. They don't usually. It's a good idea though so I'll get some dowel recesses milled into the crankcases when I do my build
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zClQZf_btN5_WpnI83wNFP6OpDgWoW6E-6snDT4ROKcutjcXoPlyDdavgBEO97FvgdLX2BcdR5xlBLL8OPRlur7amnnUaH8Axinv0UM-rDRvEGhYGm3oKyiN-yxlcuBcbhB12FS96w=w1178-h883-no
Crank in (note strategically placed hammer so it sits high enough to prevent the end of the crank fouling the bench).
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wCrVinVXPI0DwBuJBNR8qY-dvK2An-LwDETF-4GrVXlDJ_yrMfqk8IEr1LDINZsbCJ0vbulEM4OPlNgIKbzq0Y0N9H69JwlObY39MlBgutreO19O-NmQO6eCIZ2rICK_05SfZdQ1Vg=w1178-h883-no
Then it's a case of lowering the other half on top, tapping it into place with a rubber mallet and putting all the crankcase nuts/studs back in.
Just up to finger tight for now because an oddity of these motors, mostly duel to rough as hell engineering and the afore-mentioned lack of dowels is that you can get these together off-square. That puts side loading on the mains and the crank eats itself.
So you need to tighten the nuts down gradually while making sure the crank rotates. It's where an "Enfield Wallah" would get an assistant to pump the conrod up and down while he nips up the nuts. I've settled for tightening them a little at a time then turning the crank a few times, then tightening some more.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/AaetF0kY9lrWv4_oQ3gpeBos0SmjClLAviwtDo1GU1N_EftQUtL4a6Bjx-HIpW64MvjX5fnv5h2Rz8O3djf_RHXWUkZMBC0_93FinTWlFz7EFWm1LfKTRM6Z6dt7-tZK_j9Khrq6ZQ=w1178-h883-no
Then final itghtening. They do not need to be very tight at all. The big nuts are 11Nm, the small ones are 9Nm. I'll re-check these again once it's all assembled in case of settling.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/FlOrtXJnCGQfurxLAXqyy3z7zhIHq-jMEbsBcnMg2HkZsVLKECXDtNaStu8FX8b8fwvzQMD64o9v8RV1tsDVRWkhbT0c4QdVY0HiINPBN7YAPR0bodYq6zzBFXn5cy2ttjiMNe8cgA=w1178-h883-no
Now the barrel. Clean mating surface.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/U5o0i2aMNxW97vss-jnabMk9T9bT4G4FYW1YnlkY0fj53pHQzQ5MUtMkOgH4LRnl686WXpCCtnKoginc_ZCde4mprEF0_NF9xRN3ZuKIO1wHOoRdk2BdhVo-R870d1fdAvYuXol6pw=w1178-h883-no
I'm using my gloop as a bead this time. I can get a finger and a rag in the pushrod tunnels to wipe away any excess once it's assembled.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OCnzs0FlxWq7zregALa0FwNqaU6MH6yezkAcVEoDVZ5KlI0gsFc93LIrfaQjmP654umxbxWeaVFRyQediPf2x3Qk5jVRbqCpo2XDy8YGAQrzVPjOadrKuorwDJBTfI2ek3keHfUMiA=w1178-h883-no
I think there are enough honing marks here to bed the rings so I'll not hit it up with the glaze-buster again.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gvsMIraPGqJgFWY1FXsd2m9vGOsb906c9Kb6n10s48yT-MjYs1oCx6RzkfdCDUzk6oiDTxDuRQGUljoSwBej0cwYO380Rsj3-pYAKOZ1FzfmlNQcJIj_Y-5sY94sKsdWmVZHZlGbow=w663-h883-no
A little cursing and some nipped fingers later and the barrel is on. It helps to put a screwdriver through the gudgeon pin to prevent the piston dropping into the cases while you fiddle the rings into place.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mbLAiBgQrbavpuan1RTpBuS2LW1cR-4txANsLd3tDnnn87Hrg22bDGeKocgUliIqYYGy5VUpoh9I9AzUO2Zo3zJfWiNr0c-UBIyInx4ydBhgq4OTYNTPN68nVORyJfHGFVXsSknchQ=w1178-h883-no

Next step will be the head but I need to order a new head gasket first.

I've been researching how to time it up for the valve timing. You're going to love how simple it is! ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

To be fair that's a really nice, well thought out engine design as it sits. I wouldn't get rid of it. You know it's bulletproof because they just ARE, and you didn't pay a whole lot for it. Surely you have room for an orphaned Enfield at the end of your bed? It's too good to let go.

In other news. I just won a 500 bullet basket case on ebay. Engine was dismantled years ago and never reassembled. It has a disc brake front end among other things. Once I have this, that's my crankcases sorted and pretty much all the running gear I need.
I'm watching another one, a theft write-off that has to have the frame scrapped. If I win that too. I'll have enough parts to build up a full, running 500 bullet to sell and a rake of vintage parts off the original basket case to punt to someone who will use them.
I'm currently dismantling the rolling chassis of the one I already have. The degree of hipster-derived fuckwittery going on is simply mindblowing! This was a total abortion of a motorcycle. It would never have passed an MOT. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Oh. Latest installation from the fuckwit archives.
I was refitting the distributor and decided to check the auto-advance.
Hmm. Not moving.
Despite repeated cleaning and lubing, it was still notchy and sticking out/in.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Dkme5HW0fvRyOu1decRpHVSus4i0Q3pEtYpXg0CGZewX61GXsnWzq1sLBRNY9ZTGsDCdtqzK_lez77KRNiJP5JB3OqKrfk2dvTzLTk9LSHXiI2l2ffqYZRolnHuDNixjDVwK8nSxdw=w1178-h883-no
So I decided to strip it and see what was going on. Immediately noticed something a bit odd. One rusty weight, one clean shiny one.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TME0L3Mbn7R0vJZbvhwAHRlXOd_e2oSF0HTYl1MVbtSOn4ueYEP-tbMTK0tpViku4w_25WpIGza7-W1dYejGQCfyFsak0agXTRbFGquqP5UcC7LruiwSeNqFRtWASZU8J0_DpyGRiw=w1178-h883-no
The rest seems ok.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wUcxb8qRnvBps3ySi5UsFYgwXkLLRGRelEfGvQetZgPCJgRwTxi8F1VWDH4cE3qYwBVannpLFeZWz2LFwzq5LJG6uZFRphuF0RPtckw4ceFa6oAjY3JvD51-z8-pv8AL0CXvLFYn-Q=w1178-h883-no
Cleaned the rust up as best I can to no effect. On a whim, decided to try swapping the weights to opposite sides. Odd, they don't go, the clean one fits either side, the rusty one only fits one side.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OmqAmhvw7ty0Xv3p9ROaRojLRQScd4sJuCpzclkUl3bUqvclT4hID90363WBsemPlwZ5V7GY9REzANJ9lCfcjgpQzDNMxUIlYwSHOjZ9Nl2rL34bzinD5SrPMz4MmV7bVHkRC5HfJA=w1178-h883-no
Yes, that curved oval hole is 0.30mm narrower on this one. That's at least 0.2mm narrower than the pin it's supposed to fit over. Curious .
Except now it fits over one pin. Presuambly fuckwit lost a weight and robbed one off his 1950's donor bike. Only it didn't fit. So he angle ground a face onto the pin. Now it's flat on one face and sticks in the hole.
The weight itself is also marginally thicker than the original so it fouls the backing plate when assembled.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7hyQQDKGA-d_dhRk5q7LALjb9kHhdDLk-uvTCgClr0DD76ubxNO_2kjJeCOLutFkTntI088JA_FdcSaxSrMgkEnn-krihGgZoVBzreV4IbzwwCyMyMCvXjgRVnbtSTb0TtYy4uynhA=w1178-h883-no
The only fix for this is going to be to replace it and they're not cheap (uless you get them from india) so I hope I win this other spares bike.
The bike would have run like a piece of crap with a faulty autoadvance like this. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Much progress today c/o another fucked bike off the internet. This one was £800. Picked up from behind an Indian Take-away in Nottingham.
Turns out to be an Indian home market 2004 500 single (2003 reg, meh). Perfect engine for the 612 conversion. This engine has a fucked big end, owner took the engine out dismantled the top end then abandonned it. One less job for me.
This bike is entirely complete. It's donating its fucked engine for my project and it's going to receive the newly rebuilt one to sell on.
Also has a disc brake front end which is perfect for my project bike.

THIS is the engine I have been looking for. Note high quality containers. Judge a basket-case by the quality of the baskets. These are pretty good.

I also went in past Hitchcocks in Solihull on the way back. Swapped the sidecar front end for a swingarm, a casquette, couple of oil filters and a head gasket. The front end is worth more than that but only if you can find someone who wants one.

All I'm really looking for now is a set of standard forks and a gearbox. I've got a load of bits to punt on ebay which will get at least a 4-speed box. Tempted to go for a 5-speed though. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Nice purchase on the basket case. Can't wait to move somewhere with a decent size garage/workshop. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Busy, busy.
I've decided I need to have the selling bike built, MOTed and out of the way before I start building my own one. A bit of self discipline or I'll land up with two, half-built bikes and no room.
Also buys me time to watch ebay etc. for parts. Although I did just win a really tidy front wheel complete with the newer (and better) brembo brake calliper and master cylinder that will bolt straight on to a standard front end in place of the drum braked wheel. As such, I can punt this one complete with the disc brake.
Anyway. On with rebuilding the standard 500 motor.
This is a lovely looking head. SOmeone has spent a lot of time on it. It's got valve stem oil seals fitted too (they don't as standard).

Hitchcocks recommended jointing compound. You can paint it on with a brush.

This is important. Enfield heads are total sods for getting stuck on. It's not the gasket goo, it's the washers under the head nut deforming and jamming on the studs. These are special, hardened washers to prevent that. The other option is getting head studs made up with a square end so they can be unscrewed and removed with the head in situ. Or both. These are the cheaper option.

A torque wrench is a dangerous thing on an enfield, you can easily stripthreads. By hand with attentiveness is the normal way to tighten things but head nuts do need to be uniform.

Now a mistake. I fitted the primary chain case, forgetting that I'll need to fit the gearbox sprocket later. Only three nuts to put it on and off though.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5-fdDPVj8ehu8HRE1_UZ3-wYyvfgnq8ETgmgdnde-PZwQHoHjvB2fh7_9tfk3wh5ir1uuAsXIGNySPsaA1gmWToVGMxFjhHGbBUiN42dXmSi6Rs1SZTDYxIYqiIBP5bvu94gd0M-Gg=w1178-h883-no
You can see the gasket goo squeeze-out. As before, this will wipe away with a cloth but confirms I have all-round coverage.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_T38Sc3sN6sOUs4kG7eiq82zokUilu-rNzSl9A0jPHAxE4-bFN5bX3wV8QPfmnKFdsXB5_gZOonP-F4w19E4lCRL1jteQarPS6BuiL-JLKaES-vgUtCpyxUGBs_cfZUYWhqE905TVw=w1178-h883-no
This engine needs to go in a frame soon. Someone told me it's much easier without the gearbox in place. So a rake through the box of bits to find the spacers, bolts and engine plates then a good hour of cleaning and de-greasing because they were covered in road dirt and chain fling.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_FUhPYvrsa-ckP0CQ6NJ4jmwoT2bIUdJCl3WXmJhNq-MbcN-AV-TZfgtYSPc1CIxgntErnqvIz81xbFUQLfROgqWpUxMNLzyfXcIl9Hth3-YgOCr30aOJ7EV93sUUKBAiRogoga8Yw=w663-h883-no
All great fun, someone else took it entirely apart then threw all the bits in a box. it's like a jigsaw without the picture on the box. So I went and found one.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/F_TiU1GTqW8Roby4NYlUuuuW-THvc7X5g8HyCDJLkiSazAM_nefYKW-IH1bs_x95kSsDmvwk9Z2TQbcUJQvhEPgEL4MGabTta8gjHKl9f-ieCeQnJ1kh9R7U_Cw1KiZCiF-tzeid9Q=w663-h883-no
Removing the gearbox studs first, these will be put back in AFTER the gearbox is put in the frame if all goes according to plan. Also an excuse to use one of my special tools, a stud wrench.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/vPxFzojmLtgZ03IBJZPtuQkEgW3fuJOG_uXh1slWPZR7OPLT-ReTswSCjfgb8xTNKtczV5PJTYCeAh_YcjgLYVXJNDSIOty7fllXBmi7q16AtQSkFSJ6wIz3XAO6D75kUnx280wMYg=w1178-h883-no
Both stands on this bike are attached to the engine. The engine is a fully stressed frame member so I've balanced it with axle stands under the swingarm (it's too narrow for my paddock stand). Washing up basin and plank of wood to rest the engine on.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CqFPOCRx-qVYSIa0efeIBTg8AarmuE0wSW0Sp7RQ0E0hXfpi0bmdx7fs6WYaI1w9Y_xCdqEC3MSH9mgw4jfLeFnRU1qwnAyWdJ-brFOpknXhlc9harJGUReLxlrs6ONREzIt7W_m3Q=w1178-h883-no
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HlR8rdMcud7YjYLFFAVmdCe46MjuW2EjalyO1pUc50zTiQwKxnYOGgnZyNvxsMvh4U1DhDvpMVn2jNNziEGnsf-fwF6nFl7dUEKP-e7nE8Ey7TVEhgc58ytvbDCKkAHRaWrqnq_Wbw=w1178-h883-no
FIrst I pivoted the engine up and put the front bolt in.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/AK2e2OJHNQJVwS5fBhWBy_V6VjNAYQJTBDQbnTWIf28qar85l6Y2WK49q5e96UbSTIzykREHXNF_w70C-BskT7Pvq3GrujFaAHwZCLdC88Ykmbx0AsK12f5jq7lIBljdalac96GzZg=w1178-h883-no
Then I fitted the engine plates in the frame without the spacers. Notice the new split pin for the mainstand pivot is wrapped round the pin. This makes the stand pivot round the bar rather than the bar pivoting in the engine plate which makes it oval over time.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/omMLhGymmNfNmXa3ebuc5GsLIqbEgnooofDXoX49C0ZFfwmuxoegHDFgSBc1w1CBpXsAlDbW3o8t_8cT35lHyk1SkHnl7GLDX6GNmenfsTfdfL7Uqz3UP_R8E3nDhFu7BTuhtV3aUg=w1178-h883-no
This took a degreeof jiggery-pokery because the frame springs apart when you remove the engine. Stuff needs prying into line with a crowbar to get the bolts in. I'm very pleased I left the gearbox off so i can see what I'm doing.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ZTOCJGJt76W_k6aCd4PPQQpfkfRzqx48FBnqtnwALTWeF7BAxsHsYDAMxft45YHlkUqS79R6_0u5ftPwk4ePWSsg0RlL8nr3sDVcYkVWaImN-uAF1sjykyzgj61MBgncTUHBVm69zg=w1178-h883-no
Teh two spacers on the back bolt were an utter BASTARD to get in. Crow bar and hammer (lump) to get them between the plates then hammer (deadblow) to tap them into line with the holes.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/E6Mu46CPeeFb5LnFq6DSNG0liP5R-SfaoZDigi6QEQgJk4eRqAndwssg9Ft4uuNAktlDlBDSKjI_LJv47kyzouz9Cyrv8j1TyoKq51rjKDq6ndEfdOTSfWzM7oUB_Ue8OI8P8DA6Xw=w1178-h883-no
But that's the engine in and now I have a mainstand. The springs for which are another total sod to fit. I use a loop of electrical wire and a hammer handle to pull them out and into place. Takes both hands and bracing my feet against the frame though. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen.
