Interesting read, but the picture still looks like the next thing to attack the Enterprise.

I probably want the engine, V4's are amazeballs. I doubt I want the riding position. Maybe in a decade they're affordable to break for an engine and gubbins.

I do like V4's.

The old VFR sounds lovely on full chat and I bet this will sound the bollox.

That picture though, I thought it was 2 engines when I first looked at it, it looks huge.

It is two engines. One covers on and the other with covers off.
It is an odd engine and the output...is it at crank or wheel.?

Who cares!

It's just another variety of 4cylinder motorcycle and while the four in a Vee, is a good layout in many respects for a motorbike, I think it says more about Ducati and their path of development of the V-twin engine.

They got up to what about 210bhp with a production 1300cc V-twin, and racing regulations apart, I think it's fair to say they got all the development out of the naturally aspirated V-twin engine layout that was possible or economically viable.

Now their big capacity bikes will switch to V4's to give them the opportunity to. Move forward and yet meet current and future emissions and noise legislation.

Very smart to make the road bike an 1100, with a 1000cc 'R' homologation version for racing. It makes sense in a number of respects:

- Although it's no longer a V-twin, it retains a USP, and probably retains some of the character/torque of the big twin.

- It means that they can run it in a lower state of tune and still compete with the most powerful 1000cc bikes. That's very wise for the first year of production, and reduces the likelihood of 1st gen mechanical issues, which would be costly for Ducati and irritating for customers.

- It provides the opportunity to compete directly with the V4 1100cc Tuono, should they use the engine (or the entire platform) for a super naked in the future.

Aside from the engine, the information (inc. photographs) that is available suggests significant continuity from the Panigale, both aesthetically, and from a chassis (monocoque) and packaging perspective. Probably electronics too. Hopefully that means that it isn't drastically more expensive.

I'll be keen to take a test ride. Thumbs Up

Agreed, but not sure on the test ride bit. Laughing

As I don't expect litre superbikes to last much into the next decade, then sticking to 1000cc does seem a little silly, if your making willy waving bikes for people with money to spend.

Additionally, as 1000's have got revvier/peakier, and are stunted low down for emissions and noise regs, as well a needing electronics to make them more usable. The idea of going to a bigger engine for a pure road bike (sales grabbing superbike) makes sense. If people really must have 200bhp motorbikes today, then making that power more smoothly from a bigger less revvy engine will probably/possibly help people to control them better and make them more comfortable and real world quicker on them too.

Ducati can just about get away with making horrifically expensive exotica, basically, its all they make and there seem to be enough wallets out there to sustain them. But, as has been noted, the glory days of the '90's are well over. I find it increasingly difficult to use the 'moderate' power of an early V twin, it hits go to jail in third, and very quickly too. I find myself being seduced by the easy roll on for overtakes and the unhurried engine when cruising. All these 'flagships' are destined for the World Superbike arena, but that is increasingly becoming irrelevant. Dorna are missing a trick, it should be a race series for GS's and Tigers and V Stroms et. al. just like it was when it first started.

They need to put that engine in the Diavel chassis. People with the money to buy it aren't in the physical shape to contort to their sportsbike torture racks.

No thanks, they will only be twice the trouble of their rubbish V twins at twice the price.

Somebody called 'Alex A' marked the above as 'Abusive', for some spacktardly unfathomable reason.

Mong.

But with Touratech bankrupt, where will they get the luggage?

Yeah, but what a spectacle. BMW mechanics changing out death forks, Honda techs running around with cam chain tensioners, Full on Ewan wannabes talking bollox to Jamie Witton. It would run and run, till they all exploded.
