Hi,
Trying to help someone fix their internal wooden doors.
There are 2 issues, the first is that the doors have swollen and don't fit very well. I'll use a plane, rasp and sandpaper to sort. This sounds quite easy, but any advice would be great.
The 2nd issue is the latches. On most of the doors, lowering the handle doesn't fully retract the latch, so the lock hits the plate on the frame.
My first thought was to remove the plate on the frame, remove some material and reattach to give more clearance.
While having a toolless look, I tried to remove the entire mechanism from the door, but I couldn't seem to get it out because I'm not sure how the handles come off (to enable me to take the square rod out), I couldn't see any grub screws and couldn't pull them off. Might be better to replace them with the roller ball type, but either way, I need to remove the existing mechanism.
Any advice you could offer will be gratefully received.
Thanks
James |

its the internal latch that is likely to be the issue.
https://i.imgur.com/qItXYMm.jpg
the internal are made of cheap pressed alloy and over time they just bend.
the result being you can turn the handle a good 45 degrees before there is any retraction of the bolt.
as they start to go people turn the handle harder and harder until they are just bollocks.
replace with new ones.
they come in a a couple of standard sizes.
you can take the old one out and whip down to screw fix.
fit the new one and it will work a treat. ____________________ PCX125 (stolen) - CBF600 (current)

You should use one of these, for getting the size right:-

It will leave a far better finish and if set up correctly can remove tiny amounts. Always plane with the grain and if you need to plane end grain start from the outside and plane halfway then repeat from the other side. You should really use a block plane for end grain, this should stop any chip out at the ends.
Before you remove any material check how much material is actually there, on most modern doors there is a finite amount of material you can remove, if it's a solid wood door plane away! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

The Yale tubular latches are the only ones I'll fit. Sold at B and Q although a little pricey there. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha
