I don't know if the op's alarm is dying or not but based on empirical evidence I would say the alarms are unreliable in the long term. So far I've had a failure rate of 100% personally. When I talked to the tech he didn't say "Oh that's odd it's unusual to have one fail" it was "the board is dead, we don't make them and we don't have any spares. Could be the fluid leaking out of the sensor ball that's quite common but anyway your only option is to remove it completely."

If as is said above they will fail eventually then ripping one out at the first sign of trouble is actually quite firm advice.
