My Bandit is a mess, general untidiness etc but it all works

I'm thinking of having it powder coated an painted but don't really know if its worth it.

Looking to do it mainly as a preventative measure with looks coming second, although the colour it is at the moment is gash (light blue frame with black tank plastics etc) plus a few of the welds on the frame are looking a bit crusty - especially the bar behind the oil cooler, looks like it has a hole init Sad

Realistically, the bike is a 1996 quite high mileage (40k), just worried that when/ if i strip it what else will falls to bits, bolts strip etc is it liable to turn into a money pit?

Unless you want to launch into a full on resto on a 20 year old bike with a view to it being a future classic.......

Tidy up what needs attention with Kurust (or another rust converter) and cover up with some rattle cans?

/thread, really. There's no way it makes financial sense. The opportunity costs of stripping it down and putting it back together likely outweight the value of the bike, even if nothing else needs doing to it.

Do what most people do with a Bandit.

Bolt lots of anodised parts to it. Always works well Thumbs Up

I could do it on the cheap as I'm a shit hot mechanic and have contacts for powder coating / zincing etc.

OP should carry on riding it till it fails an mot or explodes, then scrap it.

I know people who spray, so more that shoudl be done at "mates rates" but havent a clue how much it would be.

Just a bit concerned the strip down woudl uncover/ cause nasties.

If you can see rust on the frame, expect to find it worse in the places you cant see.

To strip it all down to the frame, you may as well paint all the wheels, swingarm while you are at it which is all going to add up to time and money. While you are in there you may as well do the swing-arm bearings + headstock ones too. I would have thought it would be ballpark 150£ for frame + bits but its been a long since I looked at power-coating...

I would probably just strip back as far as you can, find a shade of Hammerite that is close enough , wire wheel off the worst, zinc182 primer(or alternative) and try to get rid of most of the rust. Underside of the tank is worth doing too. Then clean and ACF the shit out of it.
