|

Anyone done this recently (say within the last 12 to 18 months)?
How did you get on? I'm considering actually telling the truth about my project bike when it's built and it will be going from 500cc to 612cc. Mainly because there will be a fair amount of money in it so actually getting proper insurance for an agreed value with the modifications listed might be a good idea. (I normally only keep bikes I can afford to lose).
I'll probably register the engine swap first (easy enough, just needs a letter from a garage) then the capacity change. That could be the tricky one. I'll have a receipt for the longstroke crank and oversize piston and barrel but it's not certain if that'll compute with the capita typing monkeys.
What I don't want is to get lumbered with an inspection and Q-plate/MSVA. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

If you searched from now until the End Days, do you imagine you'd ever find anyone who you could persuade to measure the capacity, let alone someone who would proactively insist on it? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I could of course go down the route of writing my own engineers report, just like I did with Mrs stinkwheels restrictor kit certificate.
EDIT: Of course, I don't have a problem with it being registered as the correct cc. I'm old enough to insure a modified bike these days. My main concern is them not believing me and insisting on me jumping through hoops to register it.
I'll probably give it one go and make sure I generate a watertight chain of evidence to prove I made the attempt. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

ah, I hadn't fully understood that the new engine you're looking at building is, in standard trim, 500cc but you're looking at altering it during the build process to be a larger capacity.
speak to them to register the engine swap and ask, how you would you go about altering the capacity as, once the engine is bedded in you're looking to do so.
if they say it's just a case of saying it's larger then you can do so once the work is done,
If they need a report then you know you need to get one when the work is done. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the capacity change, if it's visually identical to the 500, who is ever going to know?
I have an invoice detailing the top end rebuild on my XL600R, showing a rebore and a Wiseco piston kit - I know Wiseco make oversize pistons and proper big bore kits, but I have no idea what's in mine and I'm not about to tear it down and find out.
I'm guessing you aren't planning on selling this bike when it's finished, so it's not really relevant to anybody but you.
I can't imagine the circumstances where you might have an accident that would require an engine strip, enabling the insurance company to wriggle out of paying for your damage (unless you were doing 130 mph at the time, when it becomes moot anyway) so my view would be declaring it to DVLA is just causing yourself the potential of unnecessary grief. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........
