One side is already in, the spacer is in and there is 0.5-1mm gap between the inner race and the spacer. One tap will get it done. Too little, it wont budge. Too much and the outer race is skewed with excessive preload on the inner race. If too much the race will need to be knocked out and should be replaced Embarassed I did get them about right, tighter than I'd like but it will do. Any tips to prevent this? I was thinking that four equal thickness 0.2 or 0.5mm feeler gauges could shim the gap, tapped in and then pulled out to get the correct clearance. Or drive it in with a large screw and nut. I have tried this and usually goes off center.

Thanks

Just beat on it with a socket the right dimensions.

This simply doesnt require that much thought. The spacers are sized to give the correct preload with the bearings fully seated in the wheel.

Are you saying there is no shoulder to drive the outer race up against?

The spacer is longer than the gap , about 2mm longer. See diagram here www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131488815078

When you're pressing it in with threaded bar/screw and a nut, when does it go wonky? I've whacked bearings with a hammer until they were far enough in that they didn't go wonky when I switched to a press (vice, threaded bar).

But yeah temporary shimming seems like an ok idea, but you still have to wiggle the spacer to test it anyway so it's still trial and error, ie tighten press a bit/tap with the lump hammer, check it, tighten it a smidge, check it... think ah shit, oops, that'll probably be ok won't it, will it? hmmm. And call it a job jobbed Very Happy. Shims might stop you from going too far I suppose.
