I managed to take a rear tyre from just on the wear markers to exposed bead in around 30 miles (admittedly ragging it a bit with a pillion on). Consequently I had to take the wheel in to get a new one fitted. Picked it up today and refitted it.

Stuck it on its paddock stands, moved it up close to the garage wall and plugged in the trickle charger.
Maybe too soon but weekends and evenings are looking pretty full for the next 6 weeks and by that time the salt trucks will be out and the weather will be horrible. No need to commute on it anymore so will make the most of the car.

It will also give me chance to finally fix up some of the damage from last winters spill.

Not going to sorn it though, just in case Very Happy

Yesterday I went out to start it after not running it for a month or two, battery was flat...

Put it on charge over night and went to put it on today... I'd lost the bloody rectangular nut that goes on the battery whilst carrying it to the shed. I tried the bike out of curiosity by clamping the battery terminal in some pliers and still couldn't get it to run...

3 hours later and the bike half dismantled I couldn't work out why it wouldn't start. Then I remembered you have to pull the clutch in to start the fekker. Laughing Managed to find an nut that would fit the battery terminal screws, but had to file it down so it would fit.

Gone from "starts but races, choke works" to "won't start".

Before paying £370 for new alternator I checked reg/rec with multimeter today.
Reg/rec is fine Neutral

An alternator is a combined stator and reg/rec.

Should I call it generator then? I mean rotor and stator without reg/rec.

Eh? An alternator is an AC generator, usually a stator coil and an armature containing a DC excited winding. It's a self contained device.

The Reg/Rec or more properly Rec/Reg contains a rectifier to convert the AC sinusoidal output from the alternator to a waveform that has peaks only one one side of the Ov axis (the output can be positive or negative) plus a regulator to limit the output voltage to a set value.

The alternator usually has a polyphase output so that the rectified waveform presents ripples rather than pulses to the regulator.

How did you check the reg/rec with a simple multimeter?

A more valid test would be to check the AC output of the alternator, then if that's OK, the DC output from the reg/rec.

From a mechanical viewpoint it was a half-productive weekend. Planned to do a lot more but one task turned into another and is now an on-going fault finding mission.

Cleaned all three calipers. Hardly ridden - even less in adverse weather - but, somehow, the rear caliper sliding pins were still ineffective on a couple of the calipers. Front calipers were the worst with surface rust on the pistons and gunk galore (I think if there's any task I've done the most during my less than one year of ownership it's cleaning these ruddy calipers; they're good but it soon makes pushing the bike around a chore when it sniffs: dust, rain, gunk etc).

Also, as part of my on-going fault finding mission, cleaned and lubricated the rear brake pedal for the first time. Oddly satisfying blasting it - and everything around it - with degreaser and turning it into a working part again.

Just discovered, however, that the rear brake pedal is supposed to be 40 mm (4 cm) below the top of the rear footpeg as opposed to my adjustment of in-line with. I hope - although I won't hold my breath - that once adjusted it might finally make the rear brake light work properly.

Still a small list of jobs to do before the dreaded M.O.T in less than a couple of months, all fun and games.

There are a few tests you can do but that usually means having alternator connected to reg/rec and battery, i.e. checking voltage on battery at idle and higher rpm. If readings are high and cook the battery then probably reg/rec is to blame, but if just doesn't charge enough then could be both. Diode test is another one you can do but this one does not require reg/rec to be connected to alternator so it tests reg/rec for faults in isolation from other components.

My battery doesn't get charged and diode test on reg/rec gives all correct readings on + and -. And I know alternators in my model of Fireblade were infamously faulty (later got upgraded) hence why I'm convinced it's the alternator that causes the problem.

But then I'm not an electrician, maybe there are some better ways to test it I don't know.

The first generation CBF1000 had the same engine as the fireblade, albeit detuned. The CBF1000 also had problems with the stator, mine went through 4 of them before I finally called it quits.

Probably best taking off the stator cover and giving it a once over, if the stator is blacker than the night sky then it's time for a new one.

I wanted to wait another month or so but the bike is dead and I won't have time (an money) to fix it until the end of next month so no point to continue paying tax.
