I have a stand that lifts the bike from the headstock, pretty much the same as this I've had it for ages an only just put it together (need to do fork seals)

are they suppose to pivot in the middle? or are they suppose to lock? or does the weight of the bike when lifted keep it from collapsing?

One word of warning, the stand itself often fowls the front fairing, lifting the front by the fairing and not the headstock.
I have used the exact same one as in the video for a few years and every bike I've tried it on (cbr600f3/gsxr600k1/99 R1/2013 zx6r) it ends up trying to lift the bike by the front of the fairing because the tip is not long enough to locate fully before hitting the fairing.

I've just knocked up longer tips on a lathe and that does the trick but it is deff something you need to look out for (the cbr600 was used with this stand regularly for a year or so before I realised!).

That exact stand wasn't high enough to reach under the headstock on my K6 1200. Fine on lower stuff like the ZX6 and the ZX12 but no good for the Bandit.

Centre stand and a ratchet strap round the bars/garage roof beams works though.

The original stands of this type included various bobbins to give a good fit within the steerer stem. The latter Chinese manufactured ones don't include these bobbins so the fit is terrible which is where all the above problems come from.

Find someone with a lathe to machine you up some bobbins.

Cheers all

I have access to a lathe already (attached)

Is the bobbin the spike/ peg that goes under the crown?

No a bobbin is a piece of tube that goes over the stand spike and is the correct diameter to fit snugly in the steerer tube. Ideally it will be a top hat type so it can't disappear into the steerer tube.
