I think you'd get a marginally better result going on a two week residential course with Brian Blessed teaching you how to shout "I AM AN OBNOXIOUS CVNT", tbh.

Last time I rode LEL (didn't do it this year) there were a couple of those taking part - they even finished!

At least those of us on normal bikes got to sit down on the way there and back.

Interesting, but...

"burns 33% more calories than a bike"

So. A less efficient way of getting around than a bike. Only really useful as an exercise machine then.

Or for people who get saddle sore easily?

There are other bizarre exercise machine based bicycles.

The rowing bike - works like a rowing machine, and again I've seen these in action on the big rides like Paris-Brest-Paris.

Or how about a treadmill bike?. Never seen one of these in the flesh, but they look so practical -

Would prefer to try a recumbent bike even if they are kind of impractical as a mountain bike. Laughing

Elliptical bikes look even worse. Razz

33% more calories burned - or you could ride with your brakes on a little.
With the bonus you can release them!... and still spend a lot less in brake pads than you would have spent on one of these.

A rowing bike I can see making a bit more sense as far as at least exercising your arms and 'core' decently as well as your legs.

Recumbent mountain bike:

Looks fun, in a "I hope I don't die today" type of way. Mr. Green

I did look at recumbent bikes a while ago, to try and give my shoulders a rest - but even second hand, pretty silly prices.

For off-road, a peddle powered lower 4 wheel independent option might interesting - like they offer for disabled people in hand-peddle/gravity versions I believe.

No; the prices put me off before getting to that point.

Instead I have an adjustable stem with bull bars on backwards on my carrera banshee full suspension bike.

The best "alternative" bike I've seen is this:

Not sure how you'd keep your legs out the way of the rear wheel though.

Wait a minute, is that one of those uni students that came on here asking "what problems do you find with your daily cycling" and Ste Mr N. Cat gave a detailed reply of all the issues faced?
