So I need a winter hack, I was going to pick up a zzr600 1991 with just 30k miles, over £900 spent on perishables in last year, good mot history with 11 months mot and long owner for £700.

However a friends friend is selling a cbr600f3 1998 with 38k miles, and will put a fresh mot on, both come with new sets of tyres. for £900

I know the cbr has a slightly better performing engine and weighs less, but the zzr performs in a straight line just aswell with it's gearing. I also know the cbr has better brakes and suspension (when maintained) then the zzr.

However for a winter hack every penny counts £200 could go towards the cheap insurance, winter clothes and accessories etc.

Any opinions (both seem to have very little evidence of dropping thought zzr does have a dent in upper part of tank?)

I'd get the CBR.

Getting slightly harder to find spares now. Not too hard, but numbers will be dropping. The D model ZZR6 even more so, production over what, 3 years or so, vs the >10 years on the E models.

That is a good point and the parts are a tad more expensive aswell about 10-20% in my past experience.

The ZZRD won't be a bad bike, I just think if you were to get a ZZR, get a E3 or later, adjustable forks from then on IIRC. But also ram air and some good noise. But best is, like I say, all the bits from other bikes will fit, lots of choice.

But for less than a grand, go off condition purely. An older, more looked after bike will be better than a newer, neglected example.

The problem is both seem well looked after but the cbr600f3 current owner for about a year but he is mechanically minded and looks after his stuff.

I know I can't really go wrong on either bike, both good examples of riders who care about their bikes and look after them.

CBR because unless you're planning to throw the bike down the road and leave it in a ditch, it'll retain more value and therefore cost you less.

I've got a soft spot for the ZZR, first big bike I had, but it's gearbox gave up on 2nd putting me through a bush exiting a roundabout, the D model had more 2nd gear issues than the E (which I had) so have to vote against it here.

CBR, having owned similar to both (an f2 and a later zzr), the cbr is the better all rounder in my experience.

But what really swings it is knowledge of the previous owner, if you can trust them to have done work properly then that's worth £200 to me, the other owner might be better or worse, but given its an unknown IMO you have to assume the worst.
