I don't know why, but I've expected to see something a bit more like this:

Just had the hospital letter. D-day is 27th September, so it will all be over in 2 weeks.

Good luck, hope all works out ok.
Got me thinking a bit about my own back problems (as if they can be ignored Rolling Eyes ), and part of me wishes I had never read this thread!

Many thanks. I found you've got to push the NHS, referral from your GP to your area physio service, then an MRI scan, then see the consultant, then move to an op if he thinks it's worthwhile.

I had no problems there because of the extensive damage my backs sustained.

I was talking to a mate, Mark Davison who runs Motorcycle Tyres UK at Harold Wood. He's been having back pains for some time and I think I've convinced him to take it to the next level. His symptoms did sound remarkably similar to mine.

I had almost nothing to do with the NHS until I had heart failure. I went to the hospital walk in centre and the next minute I was in a bed, wired up like Frankenstein.

I certainly have had no complaints about my treatment and others who have serious issues have said the same.

It's the less serious treatments that people expect yesterday that seem to be where the poor old NHS gets lambasted.

I was watching a programme about some NHS area stopping IVF trying to save money and all the women screaming about how you have ruined our lives now we cant have treatment for kids on the NHS. Perhaps nothing like that should be NHS, just injury and illness treatment.

Anyway, good luck for the 27th. Have you got to go to a specialist hospital for that?

I, on the other hand, have seen rather too much of hospitals Rolling Eyes

Plus, being a smoker who's not likely to give up, I don't really feel I ought to be taking up more valuable NHS resources.

That shouldn't really have any effect on treatment, certainly initially. It's not illegal, like drinking. I can agree with specifics, no liver transplant unless you are alcohol free etc. but where do you draw a line with lifestyle. No smoking, no rugby, no mountain climbing, no motorcycling? Shocked

No, I think smoking is a bit different. If you know it's going to kill you and you carry on, you only have yourself to blame. I always think it's like a kind of insanity; you know it's going to kill you, yet you persist in doing it. Of course, if I found it easy to quit, I would.
The other things you mention are about living life to the full, and I don't think many doctors would proscribe such activities, apart from drinking to excess of course.

After the whole build up, my nerves and some problems with my blood pressure, I turned up at 7:00 am. I was in backless gown and paper panties talking to the anaesthetist when the consultant and one of his registrars came in.

He asked me how I was and what my pain levels were. I truthfully told him that I had a lot less pain than when I first visited him, when I had to crawl from the lounge to the kitchen to feed my dogs. He then said "well, why are you having the operation". I replied that he had recommended I have it and he told me it was a "messy, bloody procedure that I didn't want unless I absolutely had to."

We talked for about 10 minutes and I reminded him he had said that I would be paralysed in 18 months if I didn't have it and he said the pain lessening showed that something else had changed. He also said that this sort of thing happened in about 1% of his cases, so it wasn't that unusual.

We left it that I would have another MRI scan to see if anything had changed and that I would attend a clinic which has been arranged for October 31st.

Then I came home!

I don't really know what's happened, if anything, or what to think. I hope I'll know more after further tests. Anyone believe in miracles?

Terry

That is genuinely interesting and sounds like good news, I suppose. Thumbs Up

I hope you'll be alright and at the same time can't stop wondering about what might have changed. A disc shifted into the right location, something else got where it was supposed to be? Thinking

Keep us posted, please. I'm curious about the results.

He's complained of back pain for 20+ years on and off. Haven't seen him for 10 years or so so he may have forgotten in that time.

If you want a Robocop kind of story, ask the lad who did 120mph on his RS125 while wearing sneakers and seizing the engine. Iirc, his foot did more than 360° turn and bones where smashed. He sure now has issues with airport security, with all that metal supporting his foot. Thumbs Up

A good doctor IMHO.
This speaks to one of my big issues with private healthcare - that guy, working for the NHS, just has your interests in mind. Contrast that to the situation where that surgeon was being paid a fat wodge by BUPA to do your op; you're always going to be wondering whether that obvious conflict of interest had anything to do with the decision whether or not to operate.
Fingers crossed that things keep on improving for you and surgery won't be needed Thumbs Up

(I do wish the "Thumbs up" icon wasn't located right next to the "Middle finger" icon. I'm sure this must have caused a lot of bad karma over the years Smile )

I'm glad you dodged it for now. You really don't want to go under the knife if you don't have to.

Both my kids had major spinal surgery on the same day. Same surgeon did both, 1 in the morning , 1 in the afternoon. Was one of the most anxious days of my life. Thiers too I suspect.

This, twice.

They are both now one to two inches taller as a result and it all went well, thank god. Hell of a scar the pair of them have though.

I wish you all the best with yours.

Thank you.

That was five years ago now. It was a hellish two weeks I wouldn't wish on anyone but thankfully, it all turned out ok in the end.

No, no real restrictions on doing anything. Spine is basically fused as 1 bone so a little loss of movement but nothing that can't be overcome.

Daughter suffered a little loss of feeling in 1 upper arm and they sit in some weird positions but it's comfy for them. The odd ache etc but otherwise they came out of it pretty well.

The cut goes from the nape of the neck to the small of the back, so the scars are pretty juicy but all healed well so it's all good now.

Conversely the NHS penny pinch and always go for the cheapest option, at least that's my experience of them.

As long as it's a valid option, so they should. I don't want them throwing money away when they don't need to.
