I was wondering, I had to replace my car battery a month ago and there was a lot of oxidation (cock/battery cheese type). Anyway, I put a fresh battery in, and recently I had to remove it, to do some work on the battery tray and I already noticed there was oxidation on the plus terminal (cock/battery cheese type).

Is the oxidation build up supposed to be this quick or something is wrong? I've never had this issue with any motorcycle battery.

Is this weather related? The battery is in the boot, so it's pretty much at the ambient temperature all the time, give or take. Also, the weather was damp the whole month.

Copper Sulfate from Galvanic corrosion.

It's common in batteries with plated terminals, and why better manufacturers use plain terminals.

I assume you know, but coating in a petroleum based jelly (Vaseline etc) *after* making the connection slows it down considerably.

I'm not quite sure, but the terminals don't seem plated. It's a Bosch S3 (got a good deal). The previous Varta, I'm not sure, but it was 11 years old, so the fact it made it this far in its life is quite remarkable.

Either way, is there anything I can do, to reduce the galvanic corrosion on the terminals?

I must have edited my post while you were replying - Petroleum jelly (Vaseline etc) applied *after* you have made a secure connection helps a lot.

If the posts are "bright" in appearance, they're plated. Non-coated lead is a dull grey. I've never seen a plated Varta battery (I use a lot of Varta), but I've never used a Bosch either.

That's it, terminals do not seem plated

So, I'm going to remove the battery, clean everything, then put it back and put some vaseline on it.

Thank you Thumbs Up

In 20 years of owning cars I've never had battery terminals corrode whether they were greased or not, maybe because it's in the boot it sees a bit more condensation than the engine bay, as as said grease them up.
