So, currently the A500 in stoke is standstill due to a lorry fire. All lanes closed - have been for hours and apparently will be for another 2-3 hours.

Let’s say you were in that traffic and had gone past the last chance of turning off.

And even filtering to the front wouldnt help because all three lanes are closed for the fire and diesel spill...

You are able to turn around and “reverse filter” back to the slip road that’s still open to leave - and filter up it and away.

Would you?

(This is rhetorical as I’m currently sat at home comfortable on my sofa - but it got me thinking I probably would in that situation)

If it meant u-turning before the incinerator and going back down to the roundabout at hanford/trent vale, I might do that - if I thought I could get away with it. It's only a short little bit. Or better still just filter down to the michelin exit.

I believe driving the wrong down a slip road is an offence, there were a bunch of cars (and a bus/coach i think as well) caught a year so back on traffic cameras doing this, this was on a motorway though, so not sure if same applies to A roads

Not sure if this is the one i was thinking of, but a similar story

I'm sure Rog will be along shortly to point to the relevant (or not) offence being committed Wink

Yeah I remember that one. I'm pretty sure there would be offences being committed though, its definitely a no-no from the po-po.

Its more from a "would you anyway" kind of view - knowing it could result in at best a talking to, at worst some kind of fine and points...

vs 4-5 hours of your life in the cold wet night of stoke.

Never had to go it but I would have no problem at all with picking my way slowly back to the previous junction so I could use the slip road. I'd do it between the lanes though not on the hard shoulder, at walking pace if necessary. Doubtless there would be righteously indignant objectors but there's always another choice of lanes to filter between.
