I have an Optimate 3, the square chunky one. And it recently stopped working, totally dead :-/ I have managed to identify a thermal fuse built into the transformer which has tripped as I had stupidly left the thing charging in quite an enclosed space and its clearly overheated.

Its not repairable as it is as the wires are ludicrously small even on the primary, and one of the ends has vanished anyway... Does anyone have an Optimate 3 and knows what output voltage the transformer is on these so I could get a replacement?

My guess it will be around 15V, as 15v RMS would give around 20v when rectified which would be used for the desulfate option.

Well why would there be a workshop section on this forum if that is what everyone would be expected to do?...

I mean idk how much money you have to just not care that £50 for a new thing that would cost ~£5-10 for the part to repair it sounds a lot like throwing money away to me.

i`ve been down this road before .. pull it apart .. try to solder in a replacement part and fcuk some thing else while your in there ...
if you can get the bits to fix it ... and no i would not stress over £50 for a maintenance charger given the damage one could cause ..
anyway let me know how you get on ...

Is this for over-wintering or another reason (alarm). If the former just disconnect the earth, or better still bring the battery inside. I never had much luck with Optimates ..

Me neither. They're overpriced snake oil chargers in my experiences and I'd never buy another.
The best charger I've used was purchased from ALDI a few years ago. It's fast, reliable and cost less than fifteen ponds.
