A theoretical question:

If someone changed their title with the DVLA to something other than "Mr", e.g. "Dr", is that in itself illegal (assuming they are not actually a doctor of course)?

I'm sure it would be fraud if someone called themselves "Dr Timmy Smith" in order to claim some genuine credentials or benefit from it in some way, but surely in the current climate one would be allowed to assume any identity they want just for a laugh by using "Dr Timmy Smith", "Miss Timmy Smith", "Ms Timmy Smith", or whatever they like.

Apparently you don't need to show proof to DVLA when changing your title unless the new title is hereditary.

tl;dr - office buddy thinks it's illegal to call yourself "Professor Timmy Smith" on your licence for a laugh. I think it's not. Who's right?

It also got me thinking - if you did this, would your chosen "Dr" or "Prof" or "Rev" actually appear on the licence? My licence doesn't have any title on it!

Doesn't Nobby claims that his says "Rev." (erend)?

I am an ordained minister, come to think of it. I printed off the certificate and everything.

No idea Laughing

The question was more about the legality. It seems that DVLA would just do whatever they were told to unless you called yourself a Lord or something.

No, it probably wouldn't matter, and it probably wouldn't appear.

And what, for example, would the title "Doctor" confer anyway? Medic? Phd? Reverend doctor?

Nothing at all in this case. It's just a title on a licence (if it even appears).

The debate began because I reckoned checking in to a hotel as "Dr Timmy" might get you the occasional upgrade Laughing

My brother in law (the absolute cockwomble that he is) has taken to calling himself 'Professor'. Whilst it isn't printed on his driving licence (that I'm aware of), he has got his bank paraphernalia referring to him as Professor.

Fucking charlatan he is. I think they should be thrown in jail.

Anyway, in reply to your question...

You can call yourself whatever you like provided it's not for fraudulant purposes.

If asked, I will state quite clearly that I don't have a theological degree and treat religion with distain.

So, you could put Dr before your name provided you make it clear that you don't have a PhD. As fraud comes in a 'failure to disclose' form, you cannot even give any hint that you are actually qualified and must immediately put people right if you feel that they believe that you do.

As far as I can tell, there is no real title (backed up with a qualification) of Professor

It's been on there for about 20 years now. It's never fucked anything up.

It even gets a laugh from the cops when I explain that I put it on there because I got fed up with getting tugged....

If you want a lordship, it's about £15 for a square foot of land that comes with the title and it even comes with the forms you need to fill out for the DVLA.

*Unless it's a protected term.

Hence cowboys can use the term 'lawyer', but not 'solicitor'.

https://www.pharmaceutical-journal.com/news-and-analysis/news/why-professions-have-protected-titles/10778347.article

TL;DR -

Are “doctor” and “nurse” protected titles?

The titles of “doctor” and “nurse” have been in general use for many centuries to describe a variety of roles. The title “doctor” is not restricted to medical doctors and is used as a courtesy title by a number of professions including doctors, dentists and veterinary surgeons. It is also used by people holding doctorates, such as a PhD.

There are a number of areas where the term “nurse” is used. These include the traditional registered nurse delivering healthcare but it will also be used in veterinary practice by a veterinary nurse, in nursery schools by a nursery nurse, etc.

This means that, while “doctor of medicine” and “registered nurse” are protected titles, “doctor” and “nurse” are not.
