In a vague bid to heed Herr Walloper's suggestion and aha ahem hug trees a little, I was reminded of a personal rumination from the other day. It seems like I'm seeing quite a lot of dying ash trees around my way - East Riding / North Yorks / Wolds etc. I'd guess that almost a quarter seem afflicted (could be as much as a half) - came into leaf in a half-hearted way, lost their leaves earlier than other trees (not sure if they do this when healthy though - so that might be a red-herring), and look scabby, weak and basically on death's door.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed their local ash trees looking a bit fucked - and if so, what kind of proportions.

Had a big ass one in the garden looked pretty healthy I wanted it gone because it was too big for the garden. Council looked at it (because listed building) and said it was diseased and needed to come down to prevent spread. Like I said, looked perfectly healthy to me leaves were fine but officially unhealthy.

Council man may have been lying, I don't know. Down it came. Made really good firewood though.

Yeah ash is supposed to be ace for torching the fuck out of. I only burn coal now though because our little stove eats wood, whereas the same price of coal last loads longer. We're not on the gas main - if we were there's no way I'd faff around with this kind of shit. It's a right PITA to clean out every morning. Have yet to light it this year though - but with the first frost yesterday or day before, it won't be long now.

It's a decent bow wood, is all I know. Come the apocalypse that Lord Itchy Jew are slavering over in the hug-a-penguin thread, that knowledge will come in handy.

If I knew what one looked like.

Have you had your chimney swept lately? Had the one for the wood burner (it's actually dual fuel so gets coal occasionally) done last weak. The amount of crap that came out was a worry and it's all from coal burning. Sweep says it blocks airflow and causes inefficiency which means you burn more to get the same heat. Might be worth doing or getting done if you haven't.

Did I just read a Grauniad article that was pro-Britain and anti-European free market? Shocked

Did he offer you any deals on 'ChimneyPal'?

Very Happy

It is normally pine or soft wood that bungs up a lum.

There is a lot of tar in pine which needs very high temperature to burn of so it goes up the flu as vapour to condense on the brickwork.

You can try to remove it by burning some coal now and then. Anthracite burns very hot softer coals not so hot and again more tar.

Hard woods such as Ash burn better and have less tar so should help keep Sooty the Sweep away.
