In my Dad's MX5 the speakers are awful and I think broken. When I listen to anything with a bit of bass even at low volume it rattles and sounds wrong. Almost like the note has been replaced on the track with something weird sounding. It is consistent.

I'm assuming it is a blown speaker. Is there a way to confirm that it is the speaker? I don't want to have to take the door cards off to investigate then order speakers. Could it be the radio itself?

More likely a damaged speaker or a loose connection.

If it's the speakers, replace both sides ... and throw a square of dynamat against the inside of the outer door skin directly behind the speaker.

The speakers even if they are generally OK will still be some years old, and won't have been exactly dynamic from the start. A new set will be small chance. I'd reckon on them needing g changing anyway.

It's a door card off job, sounds like the cones have come away from the frames, dustbin job.

The speaker hasn't blown. It's possibly got a damaged cone or maybe a foreign object is between the cone and grill.

The majority of speakers use paper as the cone material which obviously don't like moisture.

It's a '90 so a mk1. I think it needs new speakers anyway as it sounds shite even when I'm not playing hip hop in it. It just sounds thin and depressing. Laughing

I'll tell him to bite the bullet and do From what I've seen you can get reasonable car speakers for like £50 a pair.

I'm sure some sound deadening won't go a miss. I'm also looking at central locking kits now Laughing

On a side note it is a fucking great car. I'm 6'5" and getting in or out of it isn't fun but it is pretty comfortable once you are in. I did a 3 hour journey in it only stopping for fuel and felt alright the otherside. It is so much fun and so controllable, It was wet out when I drove it and it was so easy to go sideways in what felt like a controller manor. While it ain't quick the engine is fun and revvy, it even has a little kick about 6-6.5k when you think it will be about to rev out. There are no electronic aids and you feel really in control of everything. Only thing It's missing is a few mod cons like central locking, and a 6th gear. Motorway driving is loud and it feels like it is pretty high in the rev range.

Just don't do what I did on my MGF. I spent over £160 upgrading all the speakers, and dynamatting everything I could, but without fitting an amp (which I knew fook all about) to drive them, it still sounded not much different or better to listen to.

I gave up on audio after that, and bought a stainless steel exhaust to play tunes with instead.

Except for the rotting issues (sills, seat belt anchor points...) they are awesome little cars, that seems ultra reliable

We have had two now, a 1.6 and a 1.8 vvt, the vvt was a totally different beast with 6 gears etc, still seemed like it needed another though

was fun in the snow

Indeed - i'm about 300W RMS per channel in each door andd 1000W of sub box in the boot. Wind noise is entirely optional up to NSL plus a fair bit Smile

Small cars are very limited in the sounds dept. That is because a lot of the sound you want is developed in a sound box. Usually the boot.
If there is not a lot of space for the sound to develop then the overall product suffers.

Yous need to lash-out on something more high-end to get any decent toons out of the small space in that car.

£50 a pair is going to get you Hee-Haw.
If it is worth the effort of removing the old ones do a proper job and look at something about £100 -150. (It actually needs about £500 if you were a Toff like me Cool )
