I’ve got an Audi A4 2.0 TDI that’s only 4 years old and has just ticked over 54k miles.

Cam belt is due at next service £372 inc VAT water pump included.

My clutch is already on its way out (common problem). Looking at £980 inc VAT for clutch and dual mass flywheel.

These prices are Independent Audi specialists. Audi garage was looking at close to £4K...

My car allowance and mileage allowance covers this, so I’m not feeling too butthurt, but what I’m saying is that I have these expensive repairs on a car I paid £13k for, these problems are much more likely on a car that only costs £1k. So forget fuel, insurance and tax (my Audi is only £30/year to tax!) and concentrate on the condition of the vehicle.

Well that's (obviously) the advantage of buying a 'cheap' car, you don't have to fix the issues, if it's a £500 shitter you might leave the timing belt and risk it snapping. Obviously the larger the investment the more you feel like you have to spend the money.

Which is naive enough to not include maintenance and failure costs.

Within your budget, you're prioritising the wrong things, fuel, tax and insurance. Reliability and service costs will be far more important than saving £10 a week on fuel or £2 a week on tax.

trouble is, those £10/week and £2/week add up to over £600 a year. You reckon he's gonna spend that on maintenance/repairs on his choice compared to yours?

That depends on if he wants the car to work. Laughing

Well, I took all of your advice... discarded most of it and ended up buying an 05 C-Max LX 1.6TDCi.
It's done 107K, has had maintenance work done (with receipts) and is in generally sound condition.
I got it for £750, so time will tell if it was a good deal or not. MOT is due in March, but that leaves money in the kitty for repairs if necessary.

Despite being the 109(I think) BHP model, it's as slow as shit, so the daily crawler lane drag races will still end in tears more often than not. But the space in it is cavernous. And it drives very well.

What a pointless thread in that case.

Basically "I've made this decision, please gratify me by praising my excel worksheet, if you critique, I'll just do it anyway and I'm not actually looking for advice."

Most threads are Jon.
People ask for others for their knowledge and then they totally ignore all the advice Laughing

On the contrary. I asked for defects in the models which I had already picked. Then it snowballed in to a diesel vs petrol opinion poll, which is when I chose to ignore most of it. I had already decided on a diesel before I read this thread.
