Other than being pulled over by a copper is there any other way of checking speedo accuracy

Is it done on mot or any other service or inspection

And also where do you stand with the law though I suspect I already know the answer to that one

Many thanks

What about the 30 limit signs I've been told before that they are pretty much 99% accurate before. That was a on a speeding course.

As Copycat says, GPS is easiest (though still not super accurate).

As for the law, I think you get 2mph over no questions asked. After that it is 10% of the posted limit + the 2mph (30 zone = (2+3) 35, 70 zone = (2 +7) 79. Technically prosecutable but generally ignored unless you are particular egregious (or officer in question is having a bad day).

at an indicated speed of 30mph that would give a actual speed of 28.8 mph..

i doubt you could read the speedo and notice the difference .....

Those 30 limit signs are way off at 150mph.

where it falls down is if the road is not on the flat ... and a higher actual speed would be achieved.. but the difference would be minimal...

Don't bother, they are off by miles. I have a theory they intentionally display your speed by about +5 mph to make you slow down more. I normally get 30 on the sign and 25 on the GPS going through them.

GPS speed is the easiest way to gauge it.

One by me triggers at 21, go past it every morning. GPS verified, because I initially wondered if my speedo was playing silly buggers. There's usually cars right up your chuff at 30 on the way to work, so it does not good whatsoever.

Depending on the GPS and how it calculates speed of course. If it compares how much your position has changed over time (like my Garmin 12) then it's taking an average over several seconds. That will underestimate if you're going round a curve. However it should give a pretty good idea if you check a couple of times on a straight stretch.

There's one near me in a 40 limits that flashes and tells you to slow down until you're at about 25. It's hilarious.
