Been there.. You can fit a pod filter over teh stub on the clutch cover it's about 5mm proud of the cover, but you have to dispense with all the old style filter.
Was it worth it ? Doubtful. I think it made mine run worse. One other tip which more likely will improve air flow is to pack out the carb cover with extra gaskets (homemade is fine).
I had a go at tuning mine and it can make an indicated 70 - just about but then I'm a fairly weedy build. Can't remember full details but I widened and raised the exhaust port a couple of mm all round removed the steps between the liner and alumininium, knifed the transfer intakes and also trimmed the disc valve to increased intake duration I also fitted a slightly bigger main jet and found a chamber that looked about right (although that is really a very precise science).
I got the base information from the books by Bell and Robinson, but be warned these are heavy texts ..
If I could justify the money I would have sent it up to Mick Abbey for tuning. From what I hear he could probably increase it to 15 hp from a stock 9..
Have a go -what's teh worst that can happen ? ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Did you try raising the compression?
That sounds like a good tip about the carb cover gaskets, think I'll give that a shot. Sounds like yours goes alright, I hit 35mph yesterday (downhill!)
I figured a bigger jet may be neccessary with improved air flow and more compression, did you drill the jet to a bigger size or buy a new one?
I think you're right about the expansion chamber, that's where the big gains are to be had, just don't want to put that sort of money into it. where did you get the chamber from? Do you think it improved the power? |
I changed pilot and main jets (Allens performance is supplier for these). Drilling is highly ill-advised.. I think i ran it once without a head gasket after lapping the head onto barrel, don't recall the result but the compression increase was only slight. May try again one day.. Scoured ebay for the chamber and eventually scored one from a 250 twin it needed a bit of welding to fit it though (brackets and header adapter.. Will post a pic if I can remember how..
Cheers

IIRC there was a nice 'trail' version of the A100 with a raised exhaust..
Look after yours they're worth GOLD these days, apparently..

Ah really, do you know what it was called? All the off road tires I've seen have been 17, 19 or 21" instead of 18".
Found this on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nma3bpl5nyI
Saw that on ebay, price looks a bit optimistic by the seller even including all the shiny new bits! |

Bought a new tyre for the rear, its a 3.00x18 Duro bought from Oponeo. Took a while to fit it as the old inner tube kept bursting so eventually I replaced that too. Both the chain adjusters snapped during removal so I've had to improvise new ones.
Bike looks pretty smart with the new tyre on it

Also found that the banjo for one of the oil feeds in with the carb had completely shattered, was just a plastic job so I bought a brass replacement and fitted it. The oil in the oil tank is slowly going down which is good as it means oil is getting through. Might still run a bit of oil in the fuel just to be on the safe side, it runs fine with it anyway.
Replaced the spark plug too, engine wasn't starting so well. Back to running sweet now!
Might get another Duro tyre for the front yet |

It's too rusty to realistically use on the roads again. There are bits inside the frame that have rusted through, hence the decision to make it more of an off-road bike.
Did a motorbike tour of Vietnam in December, bought an old "Honda" Win, which was a vietnamese copy, 110cc. Was a great little bike, similar design to the A100 but four stroke engine.

Absolutely amazing experience, highlight was definitely the Hai Van Pass

Took the bike out for a spin yesterday, down to the beach

Then today put the new front tire on it, same as the rear 3.00x18 Duro. Fits perfectly, had to move the mudguard up to the bottom set of holes. Bought a new pair of shocks in Vietnam too, from a Yamaha but they fit perfectly, they're maybe 15mm shorter but stiffer so should work well, the old ones were squeeking badly.
