I have to admit to being aghast at this. Are we really that shit in this country?

What did you expect from people who think Fox hunting using horse and hound is acceptable?

That said, politics, politics, politics. Even the BVA isn't immune, it's effectively a union.

We have very robust legislation on animal welfare in domestic legislation (animal welfare act 2006) which as far as I'm aware exceeds anything that's come out of Europe.

The recognition of sentience will be heavily intertwined with the animal welfare vs animal rights argument. Which is highly controvertial.

They are just animals, jeez.
They are here to feed us and others in the food chain, it's nature.

There is nothing natural around animal farming in the 'civilised' countries.

Other than the organic flagship farms the industry likes to show off in a 'look how good we are to the livestock' propaganda exercise, most of it is pretty intense.

I have a cousin who owns a wheat farm in East Anglia. He has a small number of cattle and pigs as well. They a just commodities to him. Something to exploit. And no, we don't get on Laughing

We have come a long way from throwing sharpened sticks at animals to feed us.
Things are going a bit far when people start caring how their food is feeling.

Possibly, but I'd rather be stuck in a lift with one than a vegan.

I had bacon sarnies for breakfast, but I can also have them as an afternoon snack. This is not a bad thing.

Am I fuck a vegetarian. Laughing

Anyway, didn't someone post about a misunderstood chap who was caught making love to a chicken (or was it raping a chicken).

Think of all those Welshmen who will have to re evaluate their relationship with Dolly.

This is going to have a profound effect on bestiality.

“It is extremely concerning that a marginal majority of MPs have voted-down this seminal clause. Enshrining animal sentience in UK law would have acknowledged that we consider animals as being capable of feelings such as pain and contentment and, so, deserving of consideration and respect. It is a founding principle of animal welfare science, and for the way that we should treat all animals. "

Well the ruling class never cared much for the proles anyway.

They are thinking, about what they can rob, how much it's worth, whether there are any cameras and where they are, and how quick is the getaway route.

You need to spend more time around them, it's highly educational.

Looking into this a little here's my understanding: it seems like the base provisions in the Animal Welfare Act (2006) contain all the legislation necessary to prosecute someone for being a dick to an animal, from the perspective that an animal is a 'thing' (in the same sense that there are laws against damaging someone's personal property without inferring that someone's property has feelings either).

What Gov. has done is chosen not to transcribe into the final brexit bill a clause that says animals are sentient and can feel emotions. Their argument is it's not necessary since the AWA 2006 already says what you can't do to an animal. What the other side are saying is it that the AWA fails to fully encompass the issue as it doesn't have statements on animal sentience.

Tbh seems like the simple thing to do would be to amend the AWA 2006 to include a statement recognising animals as sentient beings.

I'll pass, I don't want to run the risk of anthropomorphising them.

It's the UK, we care more about the dignity of animals than our public sector workers.

I'm sure it'll be reet.

I hope the £255 in victim surcharges makes its way to help out worthless vermin. Although, I hear they just got £28 million in the budget.

Thinking what name and address they gave you last time and which they're going to use this time so you don't know they already owe you a load of money.

This happens a lot in my area. People come to book their animal in for an appointment and have to reel through three or four different surnames and addresses before they remember which alias they registered under. Call me entitled middle class if you like but it never takes me more than one guess to get my name and addreess right.

I caught one out a beauty the other day though, their address made me highly suspicious and their name seemed unconvincing. I insisted they pay before being seen. Their real name was on their credit card and it turned out we'd actually taken out a CCJ against her (still unrecovered) two years ago and told her in wiriting to find another vets.

She still tried to deny it was her even though I was stood with a credit card in her real name in my hand. She just stood and repeatedly lied to my face until I said I'd have to keep the card and call the police because if that's not her name, she must be trying to use a stolen credit card.

I did see the cat because it was sick but told her to go away and never come back because I don't deal with dishonest liars.

The cherry on top was she had inadvertantly given me her new address for the baliffs. Laughing
