Come on OP, I need to know!! |
Sorry for the late reply, pahahaha. No it's not, it's completely different.
I ended up buying the ZXR 400 and I'm glad I bloody did, it is a freaking machine, the only problem I've had is a few electric bits and bobs but that's it, all getting tidied up when I have some penny's to spare
But yeah, like I said it's seriously quick, it's had something done to it as I rode my mate's pokey ZXR 400 which struggled, and I'm not lying when I say this, it has topped 150 on the clock, and it sure felt like I was flying, I've calmed down now anyway, but the engine is completely mint; with an inspection. I can't wait for next summer. And when it goes off for a dyno and and some simple refreshed seals and carbs (Just because I want to have it pristine) I'll get it dyno'ed and make a topic in the build thread for it. |

I believe you it showed 150 on a clock.
Are you sure it wasn't 150km/h? That's fairly less. 150mph is about 240km/h, that's ZXR 750 (ZX7R) speed we're talking about.
I'm not saying you're lying, but it does seem odd, that your 1991 ZXR400 flies at 150mph.
Do you have the 180km/h or 115mph or even the 160mph or 240km/h speedo? The issue with the first two is, they don't even show 240km/h nor 150mph. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Is the speedo driven off the wheel, or the engine? Stock gear ratios? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Feel free to join in with the speculation on why it might be showing 150mph though. |
If it had been an earlier bike, I would have been inclined to say that Kawasaki clocks were notoriously optimistic at the top end at one time, but can't say I know if this was still the case for a model of that kind of vintage...maybe they still were? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

My wild theory,
OP has JAP/EURO spec clocks with UK (MPH) face. 180km/h is about at the same place the 150mph mark is on the UK spec clock.
180km/h is very easy to do on any 400cc four cylinder. My CB-1 would do 195km/h with less powerful engine, without aerodynamic fairings.
A quick tell tale would be checking the ODO/TRIP actually show miles and not kilometers.

No chance some joker has thrown a 16" wheel on there, is there? |
I'll have a check when I can (Updated: 48cm across, it's the stock 17" wheel)

10% legally allowable speedo error (I think) would put you at 135mph.
According to https://www.gearingcommander.com a stock bike at 13000rpm in 6th will reach 130mph. |
It does rev out to 16000rpm if that changes anything. After looking over it more and more it gives me a feeling that it has atleast been raced once it it's life, race clip on's, 520 chain conversion, hyperpro steering damper, Domino Quick Action Throttle. There is something is fishy about it. It's also a Genuine UK Import

I have an idea. If you have a smartphone with the GPS tracker, just download whatever ''gps speedo'' app, set it to record the maximum speed, put it in your pocket and go for a ride.
I tested some of these apps before, they do work.
This way we're gonna get the answer with 99.9% certainty. My wild theory could actually make sense, given people import motorcycles to the UK all the time and to make the motorcycle more apealing to the UK riders/customers (or to pass the MOT, not sure if a km/h dial would be/was an issue at the time), changed the face of the speedo. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ
